Practice and lingering injuries

Skwiggy--WOW!

Thanks for that response. Lots of exercises I haven't tried.

I've never had a lower back problem before, not even when I was pregnant and carrying a little extra weight in front (okay, fifty pounds!)

I'm so annoyed with myself. One stupid move and somehow I signed myself up for a ton of pain.

You might check out Healng Back Pain by Dr. John Sarno. It helped me with my back pain and no medicines are required.

I had an ankle injury in '07, I was back to practice after several weeks, but I was very careful, wore only practice shoes with some special band-aids provided by my doctor so not to aggrevate it further.

What does your doctor say about your back?

Skwiggy gave a lot of helpful suggestions, yes stretching and warm up are very important to prevent injury. Hope you getting better!

I find that I am more prone to injuries aches and pains as I get older. Even more important to warm up and cool down. I try to get to the class early and do stretches to avoid them. My DP find the latin style dances very hard on the hips Jive particularly. We do them socially but not seriously.

I'm not sure it will help, but I suggest getting a lower lumbar xray done and then visiting a chiropractor.

What my physiotherapist told me was a pinched nerve 4 years ago got diagnosed last year by my friend's chiropractor as sacroiliac displacement, which didn't turn up on the xray. He popped my sacroiliac back into place and my injury stabilised immediately.

The xray will give a general overview of the skeletal placement of your spine, while a chiropractor will do simple tests to see if there might be something that's affecting your motor functions (e.g. ascertain if a displaced joint is suppressing a nerve, causing muscle spasms that result in pain, as was in my case).

While the years of physiotherapy helped strengthen my back, it failed to alleviate the spasms and pain, so I strongly recommend getting a second opinion from a chiropractor who might be able to detect the cause for the symptoms and treat it.

Good luck with recovery! :)
