Practice Partner.....

How common are practice partners? By that I mean not competitive partners or social partners but someone you can practice your stuff with. Kind of like a study or homework partner.

I had a practice partner for a brief stint a few months ago. He was 2 months away from taking a dance exam and his partner injured her spine, so I agreed to practice with him while she was recovering.

I've had a few in my time. The best ones were the ones who I was taking a group class with, so what we did really was "homework." It really helped us both get a lot out of the class.

Hey Chocolatchica, my current partner and I started out as practice partners. We were taking group classes and decided to get together to practice what we were learning in class. As Laura said, to do our "homework." I think it's more fun to practice with someone, and we were able to hold each other accountable for practicing and learning our individual parts. It's also helpful to get that immediate feedback that something is or is not working. In my case, we decided to start taking private lessons together and competing together, but even if we hadn't it would have been valuable.

Boy, I'd really like to find a practice partner but my search has been futile so far. I'd consider asking somebody at my studio but if they didn't want to practice with me or it didn't work out, there could be some hard feelings.

But there is one lady who I actually met at another studio who's been coming to ours lately. Maybe a possibility? Problem is she only takes a class or two at my place.

BTW, welcome, JJ. VERY good initials!!

Yeah I've never seen anyone posting that they are looking for a practice partner so I thought....Hmmm....How common is this? I have competed and my only goal is to compete (not so much social dancing although I love going to the parties :-). But I feel like for now I would like to improve my dancing a lot more before I step out onto the floor again. I feel like a practice partner would be very useful (and hopefully I could be for them too). I'm only on the studio about two days a week though. One day for my lesson and another for the social party and two groups. I don't see too many men dancing with the same interested dancing wise as mine.

Well, my son lives in Pasadena and I'll be in LA in about 3 weeks...

I have had a few short term practice partners in between competitive partnerships. Mainly they were other people's partners who were unable to practice with their regular competitive partners for some period of time for one reason or another. Some worked out better than others, but in all cases I found it beneficial. And certainly a lot more fun than practicing by myself! I found overall it made me a more versatile dancer to have spent time adjusting to more people.

I haven't seen anyone do it either, but I did it myself three years ago when my competitive partner could practice only Sundays, and I was practicing on my own the rest of the time. Did not do it for too long, though, as I moved on to a different partnership.

I think a practice partner is a great idea while you are in search of a competitive partner, or are unsure where you want to go with your dancing, but would like not to lose your proficiency.

I'm looking for a practice partner myself. I found that around here, followers associate practice partner == competition partner. I'm in that funny zone where I'm better than the average social dancer, but alot worse than all the competitors that practice here. So all of my practices are either solo or during the social parties.

I wish you lived in OC  (that smiley looks more tired than sad lol)
