Fairly early in my ballroom journey, when I was at my first studio (a franchise), I developed a "uniform" of black skirt and black top. I have a couple of nice swishy skirts from Ross that work especially well for smooth dancing, and I can always find a black top somewhere. I had a couple of fancier (black) skirts that I used for a routine sometimes.
Several months ago I decided to spring for a couple of black skirts, and one purple, from SoDanca. They ran me about $40 each (at Discount Dance and another online place). Both are shorter and asymmetric, more suited to Latin/Rhythm. I love how they swish.
I usually wear a practice skirt and top for lessons with my first teacher, who tends to go more by the book. But with my second, who is more freeform, I tend to wear yoga pants.
One of my wishes is for a proper Smooth practice skirt, with godets. Maybe soon! Another wish is for more colors. Black is basic and easy to find, but I would like to have a skirt and top in deep blue, maybe.
