Ok. So, today was a devastating day for us. We got to go help survey the land since my sisters boyfriend works for a telephone company. I will tell you what I've never seen such disaster anywhere, and I have been through a lot of storms.
What happened is that the ice damaged the trees and the houses to where it looks like a war zone. I mean seriously I have never seen anything like this before. It seemed like every tree in our city and in other cities close by ours that we visited were affected by the storm. Some trees weren't as bad as others, but you could tell that the tops of the trees were damaged.
Anyways, we saw the National Guard helping people. Some streets were so covered with branches that no one could possibly go up and down the street, which means some people are still stuck in their homes, and the National Guard was making sure that everyone was ok etc. Some houses had branches on their roofs, and some had branches and also power lines all over their cars to where they couldn't get out if they wanted to.
I feel very fortunate to live in an area of the city to where we only lost power for a couple of hours (we barely have any trees in our area, because it's a new edition). However, others have been without anything including food and water for a couple of days now. Although, some cities close by are now starting to come back with running water and electricity from the reports that we've been getting on our cell phones. But unfortunately for the people that live in the north of the city, well... they might be out of power for the next few days the crews said. The reason being is that when we went out and surveyed the land, we saw telephone poles split in two all over the place, and they won't be able to do much with the storm system continuing over night. I just feel awful. I couldn't believe what we saw today. It's one of those things that you wouldn't believe it if you weren't here to see it.
And a couple rules of thumb here, please whatever you do, don't go out driving over power lines!!!! We did because we had the kind of vehicle to do it with (and some unfortunately people tried to copy us), but please don't go sight seeing in times like this (only go where you have to go), because power lines are down on the ground in the street, and hanging low etc. It's dangerous, but sure enough people will get the idea to go and sight see only hurting themselves by not knowing how to drive in these conditions. Also, one more thing... be careful when driving when the street lights are out. The person on the right is supposed to go first, but apprarently there are some careless people that don't follow this rule and have caused a few accidents.
So, please pray for these people that don't have electricity and/or a home left to go to. This had affected the rich and the poor, so don't think for one minute that poor was only affected. Please pray for those that have to rebuild what's left of their homes. Please pray for those that have to make it through tonight after the third set of storms hit. Thank you.
