pre-competition disorder

What are the biggest?
From first round are biggest, and for that, if at all, you need Ohio/USDC/maybe Embassy or Emerald, one of those em-ones from California. NYDF had so many entries this past year (over 10,000) they were nearly in Ohio-territory, and a lot of those were in Smooth.

But. I asked "age group" for a reason. It makes a difference. Not sure there are ever QF in my age group, never mind first round.

FWIW, it's gonna be a long time before large fields is an issue. Good to plan/wish.

eta: well, I was wrong about QF in my age group. NYDF had them this past year.

We have a regional comp in 5 weeks. I'm doing a showcase (the same one with slightly different choreo) that was originally planned for December but got pushed out.

Smooth

And then I was choosing between 2 play styles: Social or Latin. I think we're going to do Latin. My Latin is still so rough due to lack of attention. But since these comps have $$ package fees, before even paying for dance entries that it seems a waste not to do another style.

When my studio offered me their package options for Heritage 2021, one of the reasons I said “no thanks” is that the package included too many things I wouldn’t be willing to attend this year (banquet dinners, cocktail parties, even the Pro Show). After I explained that to Pro, Studio Mgr then offered me modified packages, where I could practically create my own a la carte deal. I still said no.

The reason I bring this up is that I’m wondering if you could negotiate a package that better suits your needs. If not, and you do this comp on their terms, then their marketing is truly impressive... since it sounds like you’re willing to pay additional money to register for additional dance entries in a style you don’t even study - just because you’re already paying for a really expensive package....? (But maybe I don’t have all the facts.)

super busy today and yesterday, and didn't even get a chance to move a bit to practice. Not that anything would improve in two days, but i do usually like to get some time on my little floor. but alas not so much.
doing my first in-person local comp tomorrow and saturday, should be interesting. I have ALL THE MASKS ready. but i also had an insane stressful night and so ate a whole bag of sour patch watermelons last night. whoooooops.

I've been trying to find pro-am videos in Bronze Smooth to scope out the field for Emerald. And barely find any, or I see some Silver ones, and I'm like... well, dancing better then that. The internet is mostly gold/open pro-am. So I messaged this to my Pro and he sent me 2 videos from NYDF and that was the kick in the pants I needed. I am not a judge, but I think I would've placed. But there was a woman there who might be... just might be... a little better than me.

Unacceptable.
I am going to go practice.

(Hopefully she won't fly to Dallas).

Starting to get really focused on Emerald. I do have an internal comp next week, which I consider a fun/vacay/practice comp.

But I'm starting to realize that Emerald will not be vacation. There is a lot of pressure on it. I've emailed my Pro asking this last month to mainly be rounds and competition prep and dealing with stamina and mental pressure.

What age division? You can find comp video segments in Supershag

Thank you sooo much!
I just looked at 2019.

This is going to be an actual competition for me. My first outside independent comp, maybe I should've gone for a smaller comp, lol.

From what I saw, I would've made the finals. Would I have placed? Man, that is a question.

Lowering goal to finals.. and maybe third place.

funky competition related dreams
OMG I had my first one of these a few nights ago!

In the dream, I’m at the hotel where the comp is, and it’s the morning of my first day of dancing. I’m in a stall in the ladies’ bathroom, trying to put on my rhythm dress, but the stall is tiny, and maneuvering around in there is difficult. I’m frantic because the heats are about to start, and I’m not even dressed yet, and I know that Pro is impatiently looking for me.

I get the dress pulled almost all the way up, then realize I’ve forgotten to put on my fishnets. So I’m trying to work the dress back down and off, in order to put on my fishnets first. My rushing around has made me clammy with sweat, which is making the dress stick stubbornly to my thighs. I am angry at myself for wasting valuable time. I can hear other women chatting out in the main part of the bathroom, all sounding calm and cheerful, and I want to ask them for help but I don’t know what help they could give me.

I’m fighting to get the fishnets on, trying not to step all over my rhythm dress (which is now crumpled on the floor) in the process, then suddenly realize I have no jewelry. I bought some from an out-of-state seller, specifically to match this dress, but it hasn’t arrived yet. So I grab my cell phone to call my husband at home, asking him to run outside & check the mailbox, in case I received a delivery earlier that morning; and if so, to please bring it to me at the hotel, ASAP. But I know he can’t get it to me in time, even if the package is in the mailbox.*

That’s when I woke up. Dream imagery can be powerful, and this one is so full of obvious meanings it’s almost comical. I’ve had anxiety dreams my whole life, always about going on stage unprepared (e.g., I have the lead role in a play but I didn’t go to any rehearsals, and I know I’m gonna blow all my lines and miss all the music cues and let down the other cast members). Very typical stuff. But this is the first one I ever had that centered around dancing. Interestingly, however, in the dream I was not worried about my actual dancing - just the struggle to get dressed in the appropriate costume. Hmm. Gotta give that part some more thought.

*In the REAL world, happily, my new jewelry has arrived well in advance of my event (which was moved from March 27 to April 17); the event is not even an actual comp but a local studio mini match; there are spacious dressing rooms at the venue for changing clothes; and I have so many checklists and written timelines wrt my own preparation that I know the dream is not predictive of anything.

Raise your hand if you’ve had a dream like this...yup...I see a lot of hands out there.
