pre-competition disorder

Seems to me it’s a win/win situation. If you do poorly, you have a legit excuse: you were still recovering, not up to your usual performance level, but hey - kudos to you for sticking your chin out/getting back on the horse/giving it the old college try (pick your cliché). And as you say, it’ll be good to get back out there.

And if you do well, you have serious bragging rights, because even though you were still recovering, and not up to your usual performance level, you still kicked butt! Major ego/confidence boost!

Other than the risk of busting a seam in one of your dresses - which is VERY UNLIKELY because they’re so stretchy, plus I suspect you’re being too hard on yourself wrt alleged pudge - I don’t see a downside.

Ooo! I just had a brilliant (?) idea: you could start a new trend by competing in a cosplay outfit…say, like…hypothetically…Bucky Barnes?
HA! i like that viewpoint :)

one of my dresses has hook and eyes and does not close when i am pudgy soooo

and don't even think i haven't designed a Bucky Barnes inspired dress. BECAUSE I HAVE and it sits in my brain rent-free

I think going before you feel decent (energy, etc) during a lesson will just make for a rough, unenjoyable competition. Unless, of course, you thrive on the additional challenge of trying to perform well when you don't feel well (some people do).

It's one thing to wake up feeling a bit sick on a comp day, and to go through with it. It's something else to be feeling cruddy the week before, not having had regular lessons for weeks, knowing you're likely to still feel cruddy on comp day, and going through with it.

Take care of yourself. Future comps will be there when you are feeling back to normal!
I do not thrive on performing when i'm sick, i'm too old for that sh*t

I keep hoping i will feel better and it keeps taking forever.

I wrote my previous response in pain from the hotel room. I messaged my pro at 1 am trying to withdraw from Smooth and he said not happening.

I’ve had a very rough night because I tweaked something. Surviving on Advil coffee and fumes right now going on the floor soon.

Not being at your best is never ideal. Especially for competitive personalities like you and me.

oh no! good luck and hopefully adrenaline will pull you through!

Confession, I laughed at your first sentence, that resonates here.

On that last point... the last few years, I've noticed it seems to take me longer to recover from things than it used to. Illness, being sore from a workout, etc. i.e. I think I'm recovered, and then bam I suddenly feel wiped out and need a 3-hour nap.

I'm not sure if this is pre- or post-comp disorder because I'm in between, but I had the "at the event, not ready, not dressed, all my stuff is in my car where are my car keys" type nightmare last night.

I think this illness i had is just taking forever to leave. there's an RSV going around up here that may be what i had, since my covid tests were both negative. hoping my doc can give me somethin to help shake this completely.

also i hate those dreams lol

Oh wow, I am so sorry. This is my nightmare situation. I hope you were able to get some relief and dance.

@joy, that happened to me once. My injury was not as bad as yours, but it lead to part of my back freezing during a turn in a waltz. Fortunately, Pro realized something was wrong and lead the rest in a way that was appropriate to the situation. :( There's usually a massage therapist available at competitions and I wish I would have booked an appointment. I had a warning the day before that something was wrong, but it stopped hurting and I thought it was OK.:(

@scullystwin42, I was sick at my last competition, but that is different from being sick weeks before and still feeling crummy. In this case, I was happy I did the competition. Several years ago, however, I did a competition that I should have pulled out of. The only good thing that came out of that was that I learned that there is a limit as to when I should go ahead and do a competition and I am the only one who can judge that.

Yeah, I’m still trying to figure out yes or no. I did finally get some steroids from my doc to help clear this up.

Re: Ohio Star Ball 2021

Last week, the mayor of Columbus instituted a city-wide mask mandate to combat the spread of COVID-19. There is an exception in the mandate for athletes. I'm not sure how the mandate will impact the competition, so I'd suggest checking the competition website for particulars.

Re: Hilton/Hyatt/Greater Columbus Convention Center in downtown Columbus

A second Hilton Tower is under construction downtown, across the street from the original Hilton. Part of High Street is blocked off, and there's at least one crane on the construction site. Expect the usual construction congestion.

Both the Hyatt and Greater Columbus Convention Center underwent renovations within the last few years, and look terrific. There is a new parking garage on the north end of the convention center. A new parking garage was also under construction at the back of the convention center, but I'm not sure its current status.

My husband was just at the convention center as a prep for conference he's hosting there and mentioned about the hotel being under construction - he actually asked me if i was concerned about it impacting the comp! I had to remind him i'm not going this year. BOOOOOO

I'm not sure if I'm going this year, either as a competitor or spectator. If I go as a competitor, it will be for only 1 specialty dance, which, according to the rules, may be danced up to 4 times.

The hotel is scheduled to be finished in 2022. So when you compete in 2022 - let's think optimally here - you'll have the option to stay there. It should be really nice.
