pre-competition disorder

Before is the worst for me... I end up leaving work early cuz I just can't concentrate...
Most comps I fly too and I am thinking about..."where is my passport", even though I know just where it is.
After, the anticipation is gone, nothing I can do about the good or the bad and is pretty much just another work day.

LOL, I am flying to CA tomorrow for business and had to leave work early because of the "where is my passport thing", so it is just not a comp thing.

Partner and I made the snap call to do a comp next weekend...yesterday.

Happy news: we found out that the couple who beat us last year (it was close, I think it came down to 2 marks on a 5-judge panel over 4 dances) are doing the same two events (Novice and Prechamp Latin) that we are; it turns out the lady from said couple booked an appointment with our coach's partner to learn how to do competition makeup during our lesson, so we had a chance to chat for a bit while she was wrapping up. Really, I'm just happy we won't be doing anything uncontested this go-around (like our single dances were last year). Also extremely excited to see how the changes in our dancing mark this go-around, partner and I have overhauled our approach to all four dances we're doing (of course, I'm expecting the other couple did the same, so it'll still be close this time around). Also, the other couple seems friendly, so between them and another am/am couple that recently formed in our area, my partner and I might be seeing some friendly faces at competitions (and might have more incentive to do some of the local ones if we know another couple or two will also be competing in our events).

Now to just...focus...on work and practice for the rest of the week.

Still over a month away, but it's the first comp with a new teacher and the first comp in a year and a half...the stress level isn't too bad so far, I'm only dreaming of my comp routines and mildly stressing over the new(ish) experience of having to pack for a comp involving an airplane and limited luggage, but it's still over a month away...

Somehow got away with doing this same exact problem last night for this weekends comp. You'd think we'd learn by now :wacky:o_O:wacky:o_O

Nothing like going off the cuff. If it's syllabus you should be fine.

Could be worse. I had 20 minutes to prepare a 2-3 minute showcase routine with my old pro. Thankfully it was just cha cha so a lot of the work was just adding "fluff."

The six week countdown starts today... currently preoccupied with the deep, deep question of whether I do my hair twice in two days or do a ten-dance style and sleep in it. And about how I want to do my make-up for latin... 'cause for the first time, I'll get to play with not-standard-appropriate make-up, which I am kind of excited about.

I'm sure at some point, I'll start freaking about the dancing, but right now it seems to be all about the grooming for me :)

This is a fun dramatic Latin look if you want to go all out with the eye makeup

About 8 weeks out from the biggest comp of the year...debating how much I can feasibly amp up training and still manage to survive uni and work.

I want to do more HIIT...my cardio fitness is nonsense, and I've found that if I frame it as a straight 5 final, I can bear 12 minutes of treadmill.
Weight loss...hopefully HIIT will feed (hah) into this. I've got 7kg before I hit my ultimate goal. So will be looking at keeping keto, tracking more stringently, and walking a little bit more.
Dance prep...adding an extra lesson each week.

Boyf already thinks I'm going a little overboard in how much time I dedicate to dance vs uni work...and he's 100% right...I just can't stop, haha.

Meh. Unless you're going to graduate or professional school grades don't seem to mean much around here. A C-average seems sufficient to get a reasonable job.
YMMV.

Currently suffering from pre-competition disorder...my dancing pretty much imploded on yesterday's lesson...I wore different shoes, and I spent too much time thinking about it...plus, I made the mistake of watching another pro and his student practice before my lesson...they did a clean, crisp cha cha that looked like it would make a final anywhere...it got into my head that I was lacking and deficient...which is absolutely stupid, because I'm not even doing rhythm at this event...pro said I was being too hard on myself...I'm just down in the dumps...and I am wishing the whole thing would go away...without getting into too many details, this past year has been very challenging, and I'm not sure I'm up to even doing a few entries at a local event...and I don't want to look foolish out on the floor...pro and I talked yesterday that before every other event I've done, I think about bailing...but by the time the event comes I get over it and am ready to go...I think he's hoping this is no different...I have another lesson this afternoon after work...will try to have fun today...I can always decide to bail later...

my sympathy Purr....I understand this....I have felt this....when this happens, I have to remind myself that it isn't necessary that I be the best at something....and that there is a big space between not being nearly as good as someone else and making a fool of myself....I think all that really matters here is whether or not you can enjoy it...if you can't, you don't have to do it.....hug
