pro/am comp question

Is it a generally accepted rule that a pro can only enter 1 student in each event/age? Example, if a pro has 2 students that are same age and both do Newcomer Bronze Waltz, he can only enter ONE of those students in Newcomer Bronze Waltz? The other would have to go up a level or down an age category?

Wouldn't it be hard for said pro to dance with two students at the same time? Presumably at a given comp, there's only one event at a given age/event level, right?

THAT is exactly what I thought. My USA Dance chapter started a little comp last year, and when I was proofing the heat lists, kept coming up with the same pro in the heat twice, which at first I thought was because we were combining heats. Then found out, he was signing people up for the same events/same age/same everything. We let it slide, because we didn't catch it until right before comp and since it was first year, we were trying to ensure goodwill. But not being a competitor myself, (just an avid watcher of them), I wanted to make sure I wasn't crazy in thinking I need to say, "Ummmm, NO," to him this year. Thanks WCC!!

So how did that pro dance with two students in the same heat?

We split the heat, which was a ridiculous mess combining them with others. Luckily it wasn't too many times he did it. NOT doing it again this year, now that I know I'm not crazy.:p Especially since we hope to have a bigger turnout, we just can't work around that kind of craziness.

We ran into that at the Vol State in 2007. My instructor had both myself and rjc dacing at Adult-B. I moved down to Adult-A so we could both dance.

At our studio's comp, we are always willing to split heats for pros who have multiple students. If we didn't, a lot of students would not get to dance. Some of the pros are bringing up to 8 students.

Depends on the size of the comps. In our regional comps always at least 2-3 heats for any age/level (and will mix heats to make sure of that), so you'll see pros enter several students at same level. Mixed heats (ie, one heat with 3 newcomer bronze, 4 bronze A2, etc on floor at same time) is what lest this happen. BUsiest pros will still be out every heat though,a nd that's even after cancelling entries and stuff to get them to try to fit everything in.

This seems to be a good way to handle things.

Did anyone comment on how 'mature' you looked . . . ? ;)

Hmmm, thoughts to consider.

I like the idea of letting everyone dance, but how do you handle it if two or three get called back for finals with the same pro?

I would guess this would not be allowed for multi-dances, championships, or scholarships.

Sorry, I don't understand what is meant by splitting the heat? Do you mean there were semis? This sounds way too complicated for me - I think I would try to find a less busy, maybe less well known pro...

Ugh, now I'm back to my first thoughts of it being too much trouble. I'm going with my initial reaction of just saying NO. I have personal issues with this particular pro, so I keep worrying that it's just my dislike of his ways influencing me. I think to myself, "Well, I'd probably let one of those guys do it." But the fact is, they wouldn't expect it. They'd arrange their students into the levels and ages accordingly. And the pro in question didn't have nearly the number of entries that the 2 guys I can say I would do it for had last year, and they managed just fine. It's just flat too much trouble to accomodate, and it wouldn't be accomodated by bigger competitions, so we aren't going to. Who knows, it could be a moot point. But if I do have to call up and say nope, I feel good about doing it.
Thanks guys!
