Pro-Am dancers who are teaching

Could someone out there tell me if this is an absolute no-no or does it happen and it is overlooked?

I compete in Pro-Am (amateur) and there are 2 Pro-am (also amateurs) dancers who are teaching beginner level classes in the studio where I am training.
They both compete in the dances that they are teaching and are Bronze level dancers. I don't know if they are paid in cash or with private lessons.

This doesn't seem fair to me.

Opinions anyone?

Aparently based on the NDCA rules, there are no restrictions for PRO AM students and teaching.. I think there was a discussion about it somewhere..

Pro/Am status issues aside, I'd be pretty angry if I paid for a class and a bronze-level am was teaching it.

Heck, many studios have these 6 week wonders teaching groups. So is bronze level AM any worse than bronze level Pro? :) Actually they should be Newcomer Pro :)

Yeah, that's true. But at least in that case they're also recieving instruction on how to teach - even if they are only a bit ahead of the students!

There's one studio in my area that I have seen do this at local competitions. I'm not sure if the "student" is an instructor or just does administrative work at the studio. I know that they do it to try to get more entries in an attempt to get top studio points. It doesn't really bother me, but I can see if she were racking up all the first places why others may not be happy - I don't think she's doing that well.

In any event, it would be virtually impossible for the organizers to identify this competitor unless someone brings it to their attention. So if it really bothers you, then make the organizer/adjudicator(s) aware of this when you see it.

Oh, i certainly agree with that syncopationer, that it's not the organizers responsibility. I'd hope studio managers would be honest about it, but I guess you can't always count on that.

I know quite a few instructors that compete as the am half of a pro-am couple.
Of course I thought in one of our many threads on this topic, it was decided that you can be an amateur competitor, while being a pro instructor. (Like am-am couples that teach.)

Just FYI, I know this has been discussed many times on other threads, but NDCA (with which all pro/am comps that I have attended are registered with) lists one of its definitions of a Pro as "a staff member employed by a studio to teach".

So assuming its an NDCA registered comp, this shouldn't happen. Again, unless it is reported, there is no way of it being enforced.

Exactly. An organizer can't actually do anything unilaterally. Someone needs to submit a formal complaint to the NDCA, which is then investigated, and then either something does or does not happen. Most of the time it seems that no one bothers to submit an actual complaint.

I've actually danced against a few women who were teaching and who were also dancing as the "amateur" part of a Pro/Am couple. It really annoyed me, but since I beat them all I didn't get too mad about it and also the women in question had comments made to them by others and they stopped doing Pro/Am afterwards.

:D Go Laura. :)
