Query about buying a dress from a vendor at a comp

Hello all! I have been lurking here for some time and have enjoyed reading your posts and learning from many of them. A question for you... I am currently seeking a ballgown and am aiming to spend less than $2000. I am considering going to check out the vendors at the Manhattan Dancesport Championship this week/weekend. I'm wondering when to go to get the best selection of dresses. On one hand, I would think the best selection would be on the first day (tomorrow). However, I seem to recall at other comps (the Heritage Classic comes to mind), the selection would be far better on Friday night or Saturday morning, as more vendors seemed to show up for the weekend days. Does anyone know how things tend to work at this comp and when the selection would be at its "prime"? Also, do they only sell brandnew super-expensive ones at the comps, or are there usually also some less expensive and/or resale items? Thank you for any suggestions you can provide!

I think the best selection is usually at the weekend events... But I don't know who (vendors) will be coming to Manhattan.. Perhaps, if you are interested in things like resale, you might be able to find a better choice online directly from the sellers...? Just an idea...

Often you can find a dress that is pre-owned. A lot of the pros don't like to wear the same dress too many times, so sometimes you can get lucky and get a dress that a pro is trading in that is not far from new, so ask the vendor if they know some pros that are your size.

Or you can just walk up to someone that has a dress that you like and ask if they will consider selling it. Seriously, it works really well.

There are a couple of pros right in your own home state that sell their "retired" gowns, our own Larinda being one of them :)

Also, there are some nice gowns on ballroomdancers.com for sale and you can usually try them before you buy them. One of the partners of a df-er here has a really nice lavendar one for sale.

And, welcome to the fourms :)

My friend did that at Ohio Star Ball last year. She asked a pro when she is selling the dress, and it turned out the pro wanted to sell the dress the next day. My friend got a really good deal. :D

You're kidding?!? That works? Wow. 8)

Well, as it turns out, I found a local studio where the owner makes dresses as a hobby and then sells them. So, I went and tried on about 12 of hers, and there was one that I really loved. However, it was longsleeved, which I didn't really want... I recently found out that a pro who teaches in the area has several sleeveless/halter dresses that she is selling... so I'll be trying all of those on this week. Since these and one other option camp up and being a little shy of the holiday traffic (and I guess being a little too shy to go up and ask people to buy the dress they are wearing), I ended up not going into the comp in the city. Hopefully I made the right choice! I will keep you posted :D

Yes. Let us know how it goes. 8) It sounds like you have lots of other options. I'm sure things will work out. :D
