Question About Jack and Jills

I've seen Jack and Jills done only in WCS here with one exception and that was at a studio that is no longer in business which I happened to participate in doing an ECS which won me a T-shirt.

So is this pretty much a swing thing or are other dance styles featured in Jack and Jills? As I say I've only seen them done in swing.

We have ballroom & latin Jack & Jill's at the competitions that our ballroom club hosts. Usually we run three per evening: one Standard/Smooth, one Latin/Rhythm, and one Nightclub (either Salsa, Hustle, or West Coast Swing).

We used to do them at our studio, in different dances. But, most people didn't want to participate and were annoyed at the interruption! So, we rarely do them anymore and only at showcases if we do.

Jack and Jills are done here maybe about once every few months. Usually they are organized by the swing dance clubs, and last August we had a Jill and Jack (reverse role, random partner). The contests usually involve four dances in the swing genre (EC/L/WC), though the last Jill and Jack had a merengue as the fourth dance.

Talking about salsa, there are also Maria and Tony competitions (why it's not Tony and Maria, I don't know) that are essentially the same thing. They are usually run at a few salsa congresses on occasion.

I would like to see Jack-and-Jill four-dance competition in standard/smooth and Latin/rhythm styles myself.

There have been Jack and Jill salsa competitions. I don't tend to hear of them very much though. There was one annual salsa festival on the continent which I think is no more as the husband and wife team have split up. They had a regular Jack and Jill.

In one of the other continental congresses, they were doing something along the lines of pairing up a teacher with an attendee and seeing how the two coped/handled it. The guidelines/description was a bit involved  and confused me (not good when you are scanning/reading fast) so I didn't pay it much attention. :?

In college ballroom comps, cha-cha is usually reserved for the fun "threesome" competition. Rumba is usually the "reverse role".

Of course, I'm the social one, so I wouldn't mind a 4-dance rotating Jack-and-Jill (change partners after every dance, with each dance being different from the other).

I only do Jack and Jills now . . . mostly WCS, Hustle, and 2 Step. I have done Salsa twice in J&Js . . . thanks to SD for a "quickie" lesson in Reno.

Once, I was in a J&J where it was the DJ's call for what dance it would be -everyone just signed up blindly!

The DJ played a 2 Step  , we rotated partners, then a WCS :D , and we rotated again to a new partner, then the DJ played a Waltz . . . :? I wanted to sit down, but got through it!

Oh man... country for all of those I presume? Probably my weakest set of dances.

On the other hand, no one here would dare let me be the DJ to choose a random 4-dance from MY collection. Probably to be fair, it ought to be a 5- or 6-dance contest if I had my way with music, with the 6th piece being a song where it's just "move your body as you see fit with your partner." Hee hee hee...

ACtaully, only the 2 Step was C&W . . . the rest was danceable music!
