Question to costume/accessory producers

I would like to take a pre-existing normal tie, and modify it to have an elastic band for going around the neck (rather than the tie material).

The purpose of this is to help my partner's quick change, so he can throw the tie on over his head and go, rather than having to retie or fix/tighten it.

Problem is, i have no clue as to how to go about doing this. Does anyone have any suggestions/instructions? I know this may be complicated. :?

thankssss :)

Never tried it myself, but I'd probably take a tie, tie it around neck. Loose and take tie off, then pull it back to approximate neck size, make sure knot is tight, maybe even a whip stitch or two to hold it in place. Cut off the loop that normally goes around neck, leaving 2" or so on either side. ATtach velcro there.

Or jsut buy a zipper or clipon tie. :)

My DP now wears what I think is called a zipper tie. You might want to look into this. You don't have to retie the knot...it slides up and down so you can loosen the neck part, put it over your head, and then just pull it tight...sort of like a slip knot.

This means he's not always messing with trying to tie a knot that looks right and stays in place.

jjs, wish that were an option -- i have to use this specific tie because its pattern came with/matches my costume pattern.

etp, thats a fairly good option... i'll keep that in mind.

How quickly does he have to change?
Does he have multiple follower-partners who all have different costume colors? :p

Haha, you know it!

As to how long he has to change, i'm not sure as this is for a show and the order of routines is not posted yet. But he is a popular pro at our studio and will most likely have at most 1.5 - 3 mins.

Modifying Gentleman's Tie

The most important thing is to come up with an option he's comfortable with. The first time to try it out is not the day he needs it. I would strongly recommend going to a thrift store and buying some old ties you don't mind destroying. Make your intended modifications to these and let him play with it. Does it really work and is he comfortable dancing in it. The comfort level is a big thing. An uncomfortable tie could distract him or cause him to carry or shift his head differently. If plan A doesn't work, try plan B,C,D and E. Best of luck.

To give advice I recommend against, he could always tie it, then loosen it enough to slip it off his head, then put it on and tighten it when he needs to wear it. It's not a good practice but if you need a quick fix it works decently.

With a bit more time, I like etp's idea, though rather than use velcro I would use hooks to attach the elastic band.
