Report on the 2004 Mayan Competition

So I take it that the October Sydney Congress isn't an Albert Torres event? Albert's pretty good at keeping his website up to date and it's not listed there either.

Funny enough, the Sydney website says it is :? .......I will try to sus it out from this end........unfortunately my closest contacts are generally Latino musicians who don't have much to do with Congress type things :( .

Hmmm, two diffrent events -- and some confusion between them -- methinks...

The Octobver event, the SYDNEY LATIN FIESTA, doesn't seem to be Albert Torres relatated.

I'm guessing that the Sydney Salsa Congress, the one in January, is more likely to be the one that Albert is involved in, no?

Okay, my somewhat out of date information is this:

The event is January is not connected with the event in October.

The October event (unless they have had a bustup) is co-organised by Marcia of Latin Dance Australia and Oliver and Natalie of Latin Motion. They were in talks with Albert to be "supported by" or be "in association with" but, if it is not on Albert's website, either it is too early OR he is no longer involved. I think it might be the former rather than the latter as it is my understanding that Marcia and her team have been doing lots of LA Congress related stuff such as hosting competitions for local teams/couples to be subsequently selected for the LA Congress (or maybe that was part of the event held around the same time last year? ) Albert and Maya were in Sydney at this event also.

The January event is a different one, organised by someone who I am vaguely vaguely familiar with (I think), by the name of TJ (but no connection to you, tj  ). He & those he worked with, did an event about 2 years ago, around Christmas/New Year's time. The very rusty (and possibly incomplete information) I had was that there were mixed reactions to the event. Hopefully they have been able to sort out their previous problems? Whether they may have linked up with Albert? I don't know.

You are spot on, Pacion! The January one (which is NOT the X'mas/NYE one) is Bacardi Festival. Internationl musicians (plus local/national bands) are the focal point here, NOT the dancers. As far as I know, there is another smaller version of such festival in Oct (?), which generally doesn't involve big-name international acts. This event may or may not coincide with the Salsa Congress.

My contacts are generally involved in this type of 'musicians' events, so I get very little information on the 'dancers' events :( ......hopfully this will change soon, as I'm still meeting everybody.

Right now, Oliver, Marcia & the others are focusing on L.A. Congress, as all my local dancers are (to a somewhat lesser extend). Everyone will be flying out this week. Things in the home front will not get much attention until their returns.

Let's hope we get the updates soon. I would absolutely LOVE to make this DF Reunion happen, with or without 'the plan' !

Pacion/Salsachinita

You are both correct. It seems there is no real information available as yet. I'm not able to get much in the way of details but it seems to be a case of 'watch this space' at the moment.

Whatever information I can get hold of i'll pass along.

The Sydney scene is a funny one. So many 'bust ups' and the like. I remember years ago when Oliver and Mauricio (of Ruedisima) taught together. They also use to have Rueda nights at the University of NSW Roundhouse. But then they split because of differences. One of the instructors that used to be in Latin Motion then went with Mauricio (they had started dating) but then she returned to Latin Motion (they separated) and now she's somewhere else.
It's just like Days of our Lives!!! (not that I watch that show)

We can *almost* start a fun thread on this :P ! (except we still have to live & dance somewhere  )

That is so true. The salsa world (actually, dance world) seems so small that everyone seems to know or has heard of everyone else.

I was actually trying to find the phone number of a guy I used to go to Rueda, Salsa and Ballroom with. He might have more information. He seems to go from one school to the next and back again. He was with Latin Motion, he's been with Marcia and he has had a spell as an instructor with Ruedisima. In his travels he must have surely heard more about what's happening!!

Will keep you posted.
