Returning to the dance studio safely (covid-19)

Just test everyone before a comp. You should have no symptoms. A rapid test is like $100.
It's like the cost of 2-3 heats. Nothing in the ballroom world. Turnaround is 1 hour.

Saliva tests are coming soon anyways. That should be cheaper. Testing is where the money is and companies are trying to get in the market asap.

Did competitors from several studios come? That would be a lot of fun. We don't really need to have 1st, 2nd, 3rd. But some feedback would be nice. Heck... even with little feedback it would be fun. :)

Yes, there were competitors from multiple studios! Unfortunately no feedback though. That would've been nice.

Would love to see more events that do give actual feedback (beyond just 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc). I guess part of the "system" of ballroom is that you bring in one of the judges for a coaching later for detailed feedback...
 
We could at least each have a friend take video. Or we could set up four cameras and let some people watch on Zoom. Having a live event with videos sent to a few judges sitting at home in their PJs then sending notes could be fun. :)

I was registered and looking forward to attending this one.

At this point, I'm starting to write off this year for ballroom comps. Maybe Imperial in Nov is an option, but I'm not optimistic now especially given the covid counts in some states and the fact that many schools are going remote.

Perhaps this pandemic will trigger some change in the structure of how ballroom and its comps operate? For example, could outdoor open air comps become a thing?

FYI: Michelle and Eric Hudson just posted an update about Heart of America. They are going forward, virtually! I think the type of format may have been discussed somewhere in the mountain of covid posts but basically, you submit your registration, they send you the music, you tape yourself for each dance and submit it, and a panel of judges does what they do, somehow, on the dates of the comp (videos are submitted about a week before).

Dang. I wish this wasn't coming up so soon, because I would love to do this. We wouldn't be comp ready by then, let alone have time to produce the videos. In addition to the time/effort I would need to spend convincing my studio to participate in this.

I hope there will be future opportunities like this, at least in the interim while the in-person comp format is not an option.

It looks like someone is going to collect together videos into heats. We'll be able to see ourselves next to our competition. The judges would judge from that.
 
I'm going to see if I can do one of the online competitions. HOA or that Ballroom Together one. Definitely not any large national competitions, even if they are offered, and due to some a newly high-risk person in my family, not doing the local competition either. I'd have to self-isolate even more than i already do, and the newly high-risk person may need my support and help at that time.

I miss competing but gotta be safe.
 
With the sudden occurrences of studio closings, now may not be the best time to invest in studio packages that last longer than a week.

They indeed started. Photos are promptly posted on their web site.

Not a big crowd, but maybe they run a simplified schedule. The floor is not very big. Dancers of all ages are present. All look happy. Well done!
 
It's been about 5 months now since I set foot in a studio. I do dance at home little to stay in practice. The main people I was dancing with before are also not dancing, so I don't really have any good options at the moment. I am in Orange County, CA, and it looks like we are running at about 109 per 100,000 in the last 7 days. France is about 16 per 100,000 in the last 7 days. I'd like to see the numbers go down a little more, and I believe that they will.

I'm willing to wait a little longer, and I've made some great progress in other areas. I have a consistent exercise and stretching regimen, so I am stronger and more flexible than before. I also have made great progress in Chinese, and I should have no problem going to some of the Chinese studios in LA and communicating only in Chinese (many people can't speak English and I especially love talking with these people!), so I have that to look forward to. My internet business (DSM) has also grown a lot, so I'll have more money to spend on dancing as well. I also haven't had a massage in 5 months. :)

This is a weird time time for everyone, Coronavirus + elections. Lots of "crazy" out there, but I'm hanging in there and staying pretty sane. My wife are getting along great too. We recently moved to a larger apartment and everything is shiny and new. I also have friends on Zoom and some other social apps where i do video chats, so I have a sort of social outlet. I know it's going to be great once I'm able to go back and know that it is safe too.

I am sorry, I think I was deceived. The photos likely are from previous years, even though they are posted on 2020 website.

I was a bit surprised as I didn't see a single mask... Even on tables, even on chairs, even on the floor. Good times...
