Returning to the dance studio safely (covid-19)

How are singles assigned a partner? I'm not sure I'd like the idea of randomly being assigned a partner.

No clue, I'm just parroting what I read on social media.

Frankly - because I'm cynical and I've witnessed so many things over my lifetime not implemented as advertised, and repeatedly have to remind myself to be flexible on expectations - I wouldn't be surprised if it ultimately depends on who shows up, and whether they take the initiative to self-organize or wait for the instructor to pair people up. I imagine they would also accommodate people who prefer not to have any partner. Not totally absurd, those of us who have been taking my studio's virtual group classes are split about 50/50 between singles and couples.

At this point, I'm giving the benefit of the doubt to the various businesses who are doing their best to re-open and figure out ways to still comply with and ensure some level of precaution, while not rendering the experience completely clunky and unpleasant.

The last 2 ballroom studios in my city that was closed reopens today.

And the biggest ballet company in my city have already restarted adult group classes for ballet, etc.

Yoga and barre fitness classes are reopening too.

Dance schools are opening in my city too. I am not going, though. My husband works in health care and if I got infected, he would have to quarantine for 14 days and we can't afford it, after all the lost work this spring. I am having a pro-am lesson once a week because I figure the risk is low as we the only people in a huge ballroom and I know his circle is small. (I semi-quarantine for 5 days afterward because word is that 5 days is most likely time for infection to become evident.) So I get my connection dancing fix once a week. Keeps me sane. Still taking lots of Zoom classes with both my local favs and some new international contacts. Awesome. I have a pretty good space that is like a small home studio with mirror and barre so I am set up pretty well. Wood floor is not sprung, but I finally figured out that if I fold over a yoga mat, I can jump on it without destroying my joints. Feels so good to jump again. First time I thought I would die, but things are coming back.

This discussion is really interesting. I don't practice couples dance, but I do hip-hop in Paris.
In France, we received the allowance to open up fitness area, but the studio when I dance is always closed.
The director doesn't want to take any risk cause of the pandemic, even if the situation is better than several months ago.
So the studio proposes "Live sessions" for pupils, to keep the link and not stop completely the activity.
It's weird at the beginning but I'm happy because I have the possibility to carry on my passion.

For couples dance, it's complicated... but waiting for the opening, teachers can propose some live sessions to show some technical step. It's better than nothing, I think.

Although many dance studios have already reopened, it looks like there will be a significant wait before studios return to "full operation." Covid is still around; and, it's even spiking suddenly in some areas because some people have relaxed their cautious behaviors too abruptly.

Still... It's a start.

Reality sets in.

For couples dance, it's complicated...

Since you are from France, maybe you can help me find an answer that I am looking for. Was there ballroom dancing before the COVID-19: with many attendees, singles, couples, and partner exchange?

Heart of America in KC has published some of the measures being taken for the comp in August. If you are interested take a look.

My studio is looking at targeting this one for our first one back. I've heard nothing but good things about this comp and it sounds like they are being smart about it!

It's a short flight for us and Missouri has had low covid counts. Excited to get on the floor again and check out KC on my day off :)

We did this comp last year and we loved it! The organizers are great and everyone was warm and welcoming. Very good competition!

Meanwhile in Seattle, some good advice.

Edit: Summary: Dancing is not safe just yet. Corona is still spreading. Keep social distancing.

I looked at two posts for dance socials coming up this weekend on Facebook. For both, Facebook had posted a notice about COVID-19 and avoiding large gatherings. That was interesting. While I'm fine with lessons with NP, I'm not ready to attend dance socials just yet.

Studios that HAVE opened have similar, but sometimes different "post covid rules." Ditto for dance instructors. Example: Some instructors are fine with the idea of teaching standard and smooth in ballroom hold. Some instructors enforce their own "no contact" rule.

One of the local studios is having a dance party next Friday.

The Glendora (big dance hall) started their line dances and Good Time Charley Single social yesterday.
I've always enjoyed the Glendora Good Time Charlies. But my husband and I both agree we aren't going out to any actual dance parties, bars or indoor restaurants for a while! I'd love to go but it just doesn't strike me as prudent.

I have resumed dance lessons. But that's much less crowded and the studio is limiting the room to having two lessons at a time.
