Returning to the dance studio safely (covid-19)

HOW??? I haven’t been able to get tested, even when I was right there at the testing site asking for one. When I took my daughter for her test (a couple months ago when it turned out she had strep), they refused...even though I’d been living with two people who had recently returned from living abroad, AND I’d been caring for my daughter (who had enough symptoms the doctor sent her to get tested). But because I had no symptoms, they said they couldn’t test me.
Most people who do not have symptoms do not test positive, even if they go on to have symptoms and test postive later. There are too many false negatives with asymptomatic people.

Your flight was full? Was that a function of airlines reducing their schedules, or are people back to traveling now—was the airport(s) busy too?
AA recently removed restrictions on how full their flights could be. This may be an AA specific thing.

I've decided I want to wait a little longer. I saw some videos from inside the dance studio that I often attend, and they were a lot of people who were not wearing masks. I am not comfortable with the responsibility then I might dance with someone and cause them to become ill.

Testing is now available in Illinois, but I think you generally need to make an appointment. Some places require a physician referal, some don't. The state lists these: https://www.dph.illinois.gov/testing

You can probably check at your state to find out sites and testing requirements. Limitations have changed drastically over the past month. T It would definitely be good to be tested before going to a competition. here is some turn around time for getting results so you want to budget time for that. But if you have a negative result you be pretty certain you aren't bringing Covid to the competition.

This might need to go in the whining thread. I thought I had found a studio that was enforcing masks and creating a safe epidemiological environment. I was happy to be able to practice on a real floor (even paying teacher floor fees instead of practice fees) and start to hopefully prepare for some lessons with the goal of maintaining. Well, it seems their mandatory mask requirement isn't so mandatory with some young pro's (i.e. those most likely to engage in risky behavior at bars and be asymptomatic) as well as others showing up for coaching sans masks with no enforcement. So I'm back to looking for a safe studio since I'm not going to put myself or family at risk for a hobby. I guess there is more business without enforcement then with enforcement.

PS: Heard through the grapevine that two studios in LA were shutdown by health department for not following guidance. One web-sites states that they are closed and putting together new rules and schedules.

Guys, are you out of your minds? You are risking yourselves and everyone else (think, your entire community) with such behavior. I moved out of the US a few years ago, and currently live in Austria. I am appalled at the irresponsible attitude of many people in the US towards this pandemic. Testing doesn’t protect you (duh). It just helps the community keep track of the spread of the disease. And younger people do die of it. I look at how the US is dealing with the pandemic and compare it to Europe, and am dumbfounded. This will upset many people, I suspect, but dancing in any public venue, studio, or competition, is out. For the foreseeable future. Seriously.

I can't adequately explain some of the behavior either. But I am one who has not set foot in a dance studio since about the beginning of March. Some of the people I dance with are older than me, and I just can't even consider dancing right now.

I can understand people's feelings to a point. There are some dance instructors who simply have no other livelihood. They are facing not being able to pay their rent. And they're not necessarily the type of people show weakness as they are trained to be champions.

When I started hearing about some studios opening, and everyone was going to wear masks, there would be hand sanitizer, temperature checks and many other measures, I started to have some hope that it might work out.

But then I am seeing videos of people dancing in Studios with no mask. I don't know how many different people they are dancing with, and how many of those different people are dancing with yet other people. I'm also a little awestruck.

I'm not going into a studio right now because I don't feel comfortable. I'm in really good health. Blood pressure is great. Plant based diet. Very ideal weight for my height. All of those things. But I'm not comfortable right now. I want to be comfortable, and I want to see that people are being more responsible and cases are going down. This is not what I'm seeing now and it's very frustrating honestly.

Dance studios are are re-opening in NYC this month. They are already open across Europe and in other parts of the US. Ballet companies are already dancing in Europe even tho in most of US they are closed.

I think instead of pandemic shaming, this thread should be how to return to dancing safely.

Or maybe don't visit ballroom forums when you don't think people should be ballroom dancing?

Shaming as a tactic didn't work for condom use, or hiv prevention or saying no to drugs in the eighties.

Yes, my main point is I need to see safe practices in place continuously, such that positivity rates are similar to New York and Europe, and I'm ready to carefully venture back out. I'm sure there are many others like me. There are other also that just absolutely must stay home due to being in a high risk group. For now, if multiple studios have people not wearing masks, I'm not ready. Later, when the positivity rate is down, maybe consider relaxing restrictions.

If this was an easy topic, it would not have been going on for 25 pages.

If only the people who agree with each other post, there's nothing to talk about. This goes for this topic as well as any other.

At the moment, some people think it's safe to go back (under various conditions), some don't. Things vary by area (country, state, etc) and by people's attitudes, risk factors and more. I don't think it's appropriate to tell the people who don't think it's safe to dance yet to avoid the forums and not post. They're still dancers, right?

I have read elsewhere that a lot of Europeans are flabbergasted by the US response (or lack thereof, in some cases) to the virus. It's interesting to hear the perspective of an American who has moved to Europe.

Some people are going back to the ballroom. And they're trying to figure out how to do it safely. (Based on facebook posts, there are others that are just going back and not worrying about safety, as happens in other parts of life as well.) Some think it's way too early. Some are wondering if it's too early, etc. And so we discuss.
