Rhinestone Question....

Help!!

Okay so I am graduating in two weeks from high school and I was thinking (in good ballroom fashion) I should add swarovski stones to my graduation cap :)
My cap and gown are dark navy blue so would the montana color for swarovski be a good choice? Also, what would be a good size?
Is ebay a good place to buy swarovski rhinestones?

Thanks for all the help... I knew my ballroom buddies would be the best to ask these kind of questions :)
Rhinestone shop.com has nice prices for 1 gross at a time. I'd suggest 20ss.

Hey, before you spend the time and the money, here's my POV as a high school teacher: The high school where I work takes graduation and graduation regalia very seriously. Before you spend the money and the time, you might consider running your idea past your senior class sponsor/faculty member. I'd hate for you to be told at lineup they're not going to let you walk because your regalia doesn't match the others. Kids who put THANKS MOM! on paper on their mortar boards are told to remove the paper, but in your case, that might be impossible.

It's just that for two decades, I've watched kids get pulled out of the lineup for wrong shoes, wrong color pants, no socks, wrong color dress, stickers on the mortarboard, etc etc etc, and then those same kids have a scavenger hunt through the crowd for shoes/pants/socks/ etc - I watched a teacher once switch shoes with a senior so that the senior could walk!! - and your graduation is something you've been waiting 12+ years to take part in! Depending on how strict or how lax your administration is, no one - let alone YOU! - want any stress on the evening of this very exciting occaision!

Good luck, and I do hope your plan works out! It sounds tasteful and lovely and much less distracting than NEVER GIVE UP! NEVER SURRENDER! scotch-taped to the mortarboard! :) Congratulations!

No worries!! Last year girls put South Carolina's gamecock symbol on their hats and others added monograms. My school has only 70 students in the graduating class and they are relaxed. We can wear whatever shoes or dress we want and we can do whatever to our caps :)

I also suggest size ss20... you can mix ss20 with ss16 (smaller) which is often on dresses, even with a couple larger ss30's in there too if you want to ramp up the 'texture' of having different sized stones.

If you do just one size though, definitely ss20 is pretty standard and has a good look.

Going any smaller than ss16 is not ideal. I stoned a bikini *ages* ago for bodybuilding/fitness, using stones ss16 & ss12's (maybe even some ss8's, goodness knows what I was thinking at the time LOL). It's a lot of effort for a result that's lost from far.

I stoned the edge of my mortarboard for my college graduation from UMaryland in crystal and lt siam ss16s. I felt it gave a nice classy effect, while making it just a little bit easier for my parents to pick me out in the crowd. I don't have a swarovski sample of montana, but the preciosa sample of montana would look quite nice on a navy background. I would mix it in with either some crystal or light sapphire if you want it to be anything more than a subtle sparkle though.

For a project like this though, I'd pick preciosa over swarovski. You don't need the swarovski name and for your purposes preciosa will be just as good. beadandtrim dot com has really good prices on Preciosa (last I checked). Though I just looked and apparently beadandtrim no longer sells in 1 gross increments. Very sad.

I bought one of these: http://www dot walmart dot com/ip/Darice-Bead-Box-Organizer-with-12-Units/24741915 a little while ago at wal-mart and just got around to organizing my stones in them. It's pretty great, I'd say that each compartment can hold about one factory pack (10 gross) of ss20s (estimating based on fullness with 3 gross of 20ss and another with ~8-9 gross of 16ss which was barely half full. I labeled the lids with sharpie. I am going to buy one or two more so I can have all of my stones in one of these containers and swap out the cylinders for different projects. I easily got rid of 2x the volume of this compact little container in little plastic baggies and clamshell packages of individual grosses of stones.
