Richard Gere Dances with Japanese Prime Minister

There was another part to the news. Showed the original actress for the japanese version of shall we dance. She was former prima ballerina from what I heard. I wished they had used a better actress for the new version. Jennifer Lopez doesn't quite look the "elegant partner". :oops:

dunno what they're dancing, but R. Gere seems to be the leader.
Yes apparently the Japanese Prime Minister asked for a quick dance and Gere said yes but insisted that he be the leader.

Yeah, saw that on the news over here last week. People were actually saying they looked alike.(Huh?)
Well, when my boyfriend and I saw the picture, we both agreed that they kinda looked like each other.

& she married the director of the film shortly after the cannes film festival the following year.

unfortunately, the u.s. market doesn't go for elegant nowadays.

and going off on a tangent, frankly, i don't find much redeeming material coming out of hollywood. and i can imagine 50 years from now, some idiot is going to watch "the titanic" & "pearl harbor" during a "historical classics 101" class at the USC school of film & television (tuition $2million/yr) and think "9/11 - the movie" and write a screenplay depicting a love story betwen two star-crossed lovers who work for rival investment firms on the same floor which will get optioned for millions & become an all-time box office hit.

<sigh>

I suspect they were catering to a different audience. Maybe the Japanese want an elegant partner. Americans, sad to say, often want something different, I think.

Other than in the dance community, the original movie played mostly to art house (exclusive, upper class) movie crowds. I think the American version was re-made both to fit American culture and sensibilities, and to cater to a much large movie-viewing audience. The American version of the film was much less subtle, in my opinion.

What do you think? 8)

It's a crime that elegance is not in style in America. To me, elegance is always in style.
Tha Japanese actress who played the young dancer was very elegant and beautiful, very balletic and graceful.
I agree with your last paragraph. I loved the orginal very much. I gave copies of Shall We Dance to all my students one Xmas. The new version was better than I'd thought it'd be, pretty fun, actually. And I loved Richard Gere in it!
I want to dance with Richard Gere!
Richard, you'd love dancing with me! PM me! :lol:
