I noticed this couple was advertised as being the "International Salsa Champions". I had never heard of them. How does one earn this title?
Do you know anything about them?

I know they were the salsa couple featured at the start of "So You Think You Can Dance?"

If I recall correctly she got passed forward whereas he did not.

As far as that title, I have no clue.

There was a recent international Salsa competition in Las Vegas (December 2005), and I think they were the winners of one of the categories, if I'm not mistaken.

I also found that they were #2 at a "World" Salsa Federation event.

Her ducks and splits, etc, left my mouth hanging open. No idea who she is, but wow. Their routine looked a lot like showdance, to me. But whatever.

I thought they were terrific! They did remind me more of gymnast than dancers but it was very entertaining!
A couple of things they did could definitely have caused some pain if they missed.

They won second place in the Cabaret division

so yeah I don't know why they're called "champions" unless they won 1st at the WSF as DM said

To tell you the truth, the salsa performance really disappointed me. When Samantha announced it as "time for carnival" I already had a funny fealing they might have salsa confused with samba. Many people who have no clue about Latin music think this is basically the same. But nothing could be further from the truth.

The second thing that really irritated me was the odd music. If you represent salsa, please use salsa music and not something that sounds like a combination of cha cha and ballroom type samba music. If this happens in a show that is not related to dancing, that is OK with me. But please not in a show that is (mostly) about dancing.

To say something positive about it, I thought the lady was really great. I did not like the guy's dancing. His body movement was not really salsa movement. Why did they have to choose him over so many great salsa leads out there??? And the whole dance was not salsa although the acrobatics was executed excellently. I have no problem with L.A. style or acrobatics, especially not when it is done in a show but I think a dance announced as "salsa" should have some good real salsa dancing in it, too.

I was disappointed that they did not choose one of the real great salsa couples who represent salsa dance and music.

wow i agreed with everthing you said, including Rodrigo's somewhat clumsy look

but they are known for tricks so I wouldn't expect 'real' dancing, especially with that song - and they are married which explains the partnership
