Same Foot Lunge - Smooth vs Standard

I would like to gather some information about any possible differences or preferences in doing the same foot lunge in American Smooth vs International Standard. The reason being, is that my coaching has lead to a very strong difference in the technique and steps between teachers, and has left me rather confused.

So method one, and the one that I am going to call the Standard version, would be that the first two steps are natural pivots and the third step (or lack there of) is the lady stepping while the man sort of lets her "roll off" so she is stepping backwards. The man has a lean sort of to his left at this point. Then both man and lady take a side step together to shape into the same foot lunge.

Method two and what I am going to call the Smooth version is that on the 3rd step, the man does not do the "lean left" while the lady rolls off. Instead he continues a very strong rotation, almost putting his right foot down early and then letting the lady take the next step after he has landed. In addition the last step (the lunge) is more of a continuation of the rotation, and a very strong "winding up" rather than the above version which is simply a side step together that can shape after both people are on their right foot.

I apologize if these descriptions are inadequate, it is a rather complex move to describe with words for me, so I am hoping that your input will be based on similar experiences rather than trying to decipher what I'm trying to say.

Thanks!

If I am getting what you are describing correctly, there is no real difference between them in Standard vs. Smooth. They're both SFLs, just with different entries. The first is the "classic" SFL entry (that, and from a hover corte), but the second is also valid, although it's less an actual SFL than a change to SLF position. You can do the same thing from a simple standing position--go straight into SFL position--but you haven't actually performed a same foot lunge, because there was no lunge.
