Searching and Merging Threads

Does anyone have any experience about working for them? I have heard bad things, but does it vary by location? i am looking to start teaching

If we had a better search option- maybe newbies would not come on this board re hashing old topics. Seriously, before anyone attacks me, I have been in this same situation, where I came here seeking help and insight, and the outdated search button did not pull up what I needed- well, not unless I had 7243 hours to invest in researching... which most of us don't have.

I was frustrated many times when reading a current thread, only to be referred to the old 400 page long thread. The idea of reading a long thread can be overwhelming. Someone new to ballroom may not understand that the information that is more than a decade old may still relevant. I prefer the indexed topics with shorter threads.

When I put "Teaching at Arthur Murray" into the search box and clicked the search button, I got only two hits which was this particular thread in this particular forum (Dancers Anonymous).

But when I tried it again but this time unchecked the box for "This forum only", I got hits for quite a number of comments in threads in other forums with different titles and was provided with a sentence fragment for each one so I could decide relevance.

So: No, @Joe. I disagree.

I would suggest that if the administration panel allows varying the default search settings then having the "Search this Forum Only" be defaulted to unchecked might help.

I can usually find what I'm looking for using the advanced search or an external search engine (which really does work well), but I obviously know the forums and what is likely to work much better than somebody new here does. Does anybody use a forum with a good search function? That might be of help figuring out what to do here.

I think one of the issues is that we sorta had a policy of taking every new thread on a subject and merging it with old threads. So a simple thread on this topic could be 400 pages long. And a fair amount of it could be filled with not valuable chit chat and banter. I was never a fan of merging every thread in site just for this reason. I would rather have 10 threads each 40 pages, instead of one thread at 400 pages. Smaller and more digestible conversations would seem a lot easier to read.

That was my fault.
