Daughter found the trailer to 10Dance hilarious - one line is an elderly British coach saying “dance is not about technique or stamina”, which she can’t imagine any ballroom coach saying - so we are planning to watch it after Christmas dinner.

Against the grain again .... I'm very aware that the live action "Snow White" was deemed absolutely terrible and atrocious by the world, but I still wanted to see it, but missed its short theater run. However, we now have Hulu thanks to pro wrestling's continual bouncing around among streaming services (so we have the Disney / ESPN / Hulu bundle) and it was on Hulu. You know how this ends... I liked it. My only hang up was the Wicked Queen's hip gyrations during the singing / dancing numbers... normally I would be the LAST person EVER to say "no hip shaky shaky" but that needed to be Tango demeanor, not Cha Cha / Mambo. Otherwise I loved Gal Gadot in that role - so haughty, glamourous.. chef's kiss of all the things I love about that character.

After reading the thoughts and critiques on DF, I, too, wanted to watch Snow White. While it was not my favorite adaptation of the story, I still found it entertaining and appreciated the values it attempted to champion. I lost interest periodically, but I'm happy I stuck with it and saw the whole thing. It will not be on replay in my in my home but I don't regret giving it a chance.

A friend asked for review and here is what I wrote.

The film started out joyful, slowly became tragic, and finally reached a reconciliation.
After watching previews of coming attractions, if was a relief to enter a seemingly bucolic landscape, although it turns out that living in a simpler time had consequences. The acting was superb, as was the photography. At times things moved very slowly, but I guess that was surely intended.
The final sequences were brilliant and intense at times presenting the spoken words with emphasis I'd never heard.

The film isn't for everyone, but if you've ever been into Shakespeare you'll probably appreciate it. Note the PG 13 rating for those of you with children. I'm sure it won't be a "hit" but I'll be very surprised if it doesn't win multiple awards.

I actually found that moment one of the few realistic parts of the movie, and the it seems to me that the filmmaker wanted to emphasize the thought, b/c it showed up over and over.

In daughter’s defense, she’s only 17; she hasn’t had 20 years to learn that yet.

I actually found that moment one of the few realistic parts of the movie, and the it seems to me that the filmmaker wanted to emphasize the thought, b/c it showed up over and over.

I think it’s the next phrase, “it’s about love”, that the film was emphasizing. I’m surprised if Janet taught that.

That said, I found a lot of the details of what was said about Latin technique to be similar to what I hear in 15 year old’s lessons, and I’ve heard the bit about going around in a Standard lesson too.

I’ll take your word for that, as I’m not so familiar with the “body” school.

I went to see it mostly based on an interview with the author, who also wrote The Martian. I'm glad to see on FaceBook some people questioning some of the "Science" in their fiction.

Emily Wilson’s review of Nolan’s Odyssey seemed to confirm my inclination not to watch - but YouTube is showing me various shorts having me second guess that for the part after Odysseus returns to Ithaca.

Meanwhile, this was a surprise!

I loved Hail Mary. Of course a huge amount of "the science" is entirely made up. I don't mind when sci-fi totally makes up break through we know nothing about. Sci-fi also generally violates more. I don't mind if they violate some things from modern physics or even-- as in the case of Hail Mary-- biology, I do laugh when they violate Newtonian mechanics we can all see in our daily lives. I mean... sometimes they violate conservation of momentum -- angular and linear-- etc. That tends to bug me because no "new discovery" is going to suddenly make those not apply in ordinary circumstances.

The "bad science" in Hail Mary didn't bother me at all because the made up so much fake stuff it was just "willing suspension of disbelief"-- just like in stories with magic. Once they do that, I don't even care.
