Shines/footwork according to gender

Hmmm, just writing about the Suzy Q - I love it  yet, I suspect that it is mainly a shine/footwork that is favoured by the females  (the hip action I believe is the root of the problem  )

Firstly, do you know any guys who do the Suzy Q (I am not talking about teachers as they have to do it in order to teach it)?

Secondly, are there any shines/footwork that you think - that is one for the guys or definitely one for the girls?

Sometimes in classes, if it is a couple teaching, the girls with go with the girl teacher and the boys with the boy teacher. Do you ever find that you are subtly trying to see what the other group is doing (instead of focussing on your own group!) to see if you pick up something new? Or a different interpretation of something you might already know or have seen? guilty!

The group, Salsa Salvaje (out of Seattle), teaches a more masculine version of the Suzy Q. I was never particularly happy with how I looked doing one, but their version is more palatable for us guys, IMHO.

Yeah, those hip-rolls which accentuates the curvyness of you ladies is much more suited for you than us guys!

More likely we're just checking all of you out!

I do a version, where I step flat footed, slouch (*spelling*) down rather low, and interchange arm position as I step. left arm pointing foward when I step with my left leg forward, and right arm pointing to the left, viceversa when I step with the righ forward... It looks rather masculine I might add...

I do. But I don’t use the hips, the same way as the ladyes.

There’s a lot, but I don’t know the names.

I don’t use the shines stuff much. Mostly as a warm-up or training at home. (Or when the feet just wanna move)

What I do, is letting the Lady’s do the shining stuff and lady styling things, while I stand still and admire the sight! 8)

Anyway, yeah, I've seen (and hopefully done) the Suzie Q executed in a way that looks masculine. I think the key for men is to have a "strong" arm position and put more of the motion in the shoulders rather than the hips. That actually sounds a little like what borikensalsero described for his version of it.

For shines in general, I've always thought that most footwork can look fine regardless of gender (with the exception of maybe certain leg kicks I've seen that are better for women or certain hops/jumps that would be difficult for women to do in high heels). The styling of arms and hands is where the biggest differences are, in my opinion.

You know what Ben Parker said..."with great power comes great responsibility." Have to know when and when not to use 'the hips' © 2003

 :uplaugh: :notworth:

Can we call you "Sassy Shoulders" too...hmm...that just doesn't sound as good as Sassy Hips...what about Sassy Buns...wait...umm...yeah... :eyebrow:

I don't even know what a Suzy Q is...I've learned a lot of shines but if I ever do them (very rare) they just get mixed up and I have to be careful not to do any Kung Fu, not that I'd ever hit my partner, just the guy next to me with bad floorcraft... ;)  :D

I apreciate the way your mind works my friend!

Hello all guys!

I guess you are guys considering your idea that Suzy Q is a feminine kind of step. As a girl I’d like to tell you that I never had that thought. When I see my (male) teacher do Suzy Q …it looks very masculine.

Every male I’ve seen doing Suzy Q (or similar footwork) at clubs have been real good dancers. I guess you must have to be sure about the step and use timing and some kind of explosiveness to perform well. Then it looks very very masculine.

(Something that isn't always achieved in the classroom. Sometimes the guys almostlooks like the swahns at the ballet The Swansea. But keep on practicing if you are a newbie. You will look swell i time)

I agree with Lucretia... I hadn't ever thought a Suzy-Q was a (fe)male-only step.

Now if we're talking a hula spin (for lack of a better description, since that's what it looks like to me), definitely it's more geared towards women. I do not have the curves to make that move look good.

I actually agree with both -- I don't think Suzy Q is necessarily gender-specific by design, but on the dancefloor I definitely see more women using it than men.

Personally I don't use Suzy Q much -- only when I recover from the initial panic -- oh no, I've got to shine NOW!?? -- and actually remember that I could do a suzy or two . In between times I wiggle and body-wave a lot. Luckily, guys seem to like watching the follower wiggle and body-wave...
