Showcase routine

I am inspired enough to maybe take some private lessons and do a showcase. :)

Showcases are great fun, teach you new things, and give one a definite goal to work toward. However, one will often spend a lot of time, money, and effort for maybe 90 seconds of showcase dancing.

I'm not trying to rain on your parade, just be aware that they are an investment.

Wow! Not only does it appear that you are an excellent dancer, you are a very good and inspiring writer. I never thought that I would ever care about doing a showcase dance. All I ever want to be is a good social dancer. However, after reading your post, I am inspired enough to maybe take some private lessons and do a showcase. :)

aww thanks. It will be my first showcase, but i've danced alot in other forms. go out there and although its about entertainment the moment is also for you to enjoy, do what you like. I like upbeat stuff to keep the crowd awake, but others can make a beautiful slow number seem like fireworks.

How old is the other student, who will dance to the same number?

I was thinking the same question, Bailamos. I was also wondering if the other student is doing the same dance. Inappropriate can mean a lot of different things. :-)

It took me a while to be able to figure out which tempo of music fit which dance. I remember, early in my dancing days, suggesting a song for a bolero showcase that wasn't a good fit for bolero at all. It was way too slow, too slow to even adjust with the sound system, without making it sound like a caricature of itself. I was miffed when he dismissed my suggestion out of hand.

I was such a wise-rump. One. I wasn't good at bolero and really had no business doing a bolero showcase. I had little control and my muscles were weak. Two. The song wasn't good for bolero, either. When I got miffed (I guess it showed on my face) my teacher let me do a run through of the song attempting bolero. 30 seconds of (humiliating) demonstration was worth a thousand words. *shrug*

I didn't care for his behavior at the time, but he made his point. *shrug*

It sounds like in this case, though, pro#1 stole itsthisgirl's idea. Based on previous postings that she wrote on another thread, it may be that pro#1 is not, well, behaving professionally, for want of another word.

Could be. :-D

In any case, itsthisgirl is switching to an instructor she can trust.

Well once again spairing the details to not give myself away on here. I told him the song, concept blah blah blah, he said its not really a *insert dance* beat. i said yes it is, i've seen it done a few times (the other teacher used it in his lesson and another in a private). So i said lets try, grabbed him and we did a great *insert dance* to the song. If he just said it was inappropriate i would say ok whatever so whats the next idea??? It didnt bother me when he said that, but when i found out yesterday he is doing it with another one of his students...the EXACT song and idea for the exact event...it might just be me but it seems wrong. oh and he want me to a Waltz to a song that made me yawn when i heard it. Aside from Argentine Tango my worst dance is Waltz due to frame and how it seems to be slightly uncomfortable...plus i find it boring. Why would he want me to do my second weakest dance and he knows i wont enjoy it? WHILE giving my exact song and idea to another student? anyone ever heard of this situation or have any experience with it?

No. I have no experience with that situation, although I have been to showcases where quite a few ladies who were at similar levels of experience and working on the same dances ended up having very similar choreography and routines, and sometimes even the same song, come to think of it. Eh.

You can choose what dances you want your pro.. regardless of who your pro is.. to teach you. It sounds like you prefer to dance rhythm/latin and you can do that, take and compete in only that style. Others prefer smooth/standard and only take lessons and compete in that style. Still others compete in all 4, or some other variation. Argentine tango, while it does show up at ballroom competitions, is not included in the championship/scholarship ballroom rounds at either the proam or professional levels, but has its own events. So if you don't like argentine tango, just tell your pro you don't want to learn it. That way you can just focus money, time and energy on the dances you do like.

yes i am. I have already spoken with #2 about doing a showcase with me and due to our preferences i think we are on the same page and it will work out. Even he said he didnt see how it was inappropriate and was jealous that his student didnt come up with that idea. So we are tweaking it and coming up with a more (for lack of better words) impressive/crowd pleasing dance that will be even more fun. I'm speaking with #1 before lesson to address all the issues i've had with him over the last few days and take the professional approach and let him know that i'm taking my showcase 'ideas' elsewhere instead of behind his back like he did with me. I honestly do try to give people the benefit of the doubt but this just didnt seem right at all. The girl in the office called me in yesterday so i could pay for the competition and discuss costuming and stuff, i show up and hear the song and see whats going on and ask her 'is that ummm my stuff?' and she looked pissed and said "thats why i called you in and insisted now, so you would know, and wouldnt be taken off guard." He didnt know i was there (double sided mirror). But i think i can trust #2, i know its a business but i think he has 'our' best interest at heart, which in turn is a good look for him. maybe thats why everyone is a big fan of his and dieing to dance with him at the socials and not so much #1. Either way problem solved. i was just wondering if someone else has heard of this situation before

I'm glad you've come to a decision you're comfortable with, ITG. Having a teacher you trust is so important, IMV. :-D

i figured there would be alot of the same 'stuff' going on. But to pick this song with this EXACT theme...its not one people would automatically think of. see he went from 'i like it' to 'its not appropriate' and now its apparently appropriate but for her and 'oh btw thanks for the idea, hope you like it when you realized i'm using with someone else while at the showcase'. just seemed odd, or maybe he could've at least asked me if it was ok to do with her or told me he was instead of me finding out THIS way. just seems...not right.

i want to learn it all and be a well rounded dancer. i'm just confused about why he wants to stick me with something he knows i dont want while taking my 'inappropriate' idea to another girl without even mentioning it to me. Trust me it wasnt a coincidence...

Well, I would not be happy with this situation, certainly....but regarding the waltz suggestion, my pro usually encourages me to choose my weakest dance, and do a showcase in that style, because we will really have to drill it, so it will naturally improve. And the dances I used to hate to do, I came to love after doing the showcase.
