So You Think You Can Dance - Ballroom Portion

!!! !!! !!!

hi, this is Stas,
we completely understand which routine we partially did on our first audition. we know that what we did was not the best thing but since we decided to audition last second, and had this music for a while even before max and yulia's show came out, so we just used this idea because we think they are amazing. in no way did we try to compare to them, but just the routine is far from what is judged in dancing. we decided to audition last minute and just wanted something that would stand out. actually most of the routine was our own but it was cut out and ironically the only parts they showed were the ones we took from max and yulia, because our parts were in partnership but they wanted to show that side by side just to sort of seperate us as people. we were judged individually. this routine and music was NOT what got us past that round, which was only the very beginning of the auditions. ...(unless you are a jelous person you wouldn't start this thread, instead be happy for those who made it)

p.s....the routine in NOT what is being judged and NOT our comparison to Max and Yulia, who we respect very much!

Hi Stas,

The thread wasn't started with your performance in mind....it became a topic of discussion well into its existence. I really don't think there's any jealousy involved at all. Probably just curiosity at the 'borrowed' choreography.

I am curious, though, if the routine was not being judged, why was it being done? I don't really watch the show.....but good luck to you!

Yeah I agree. I didn't get that either. I think that sometimes threads can start one way though and end up a different way lol.

I really don't watch the show either. The host is what bothers me. I know she's a big celebrity over in England, but I don't know. I think that they could have picked out a better host and one that knew a little bit about dancing would have been nice instead of one that looked beautiful lol.

Who is the host?

Oh I can't think of her name now. She's bigger in England than she is here in the states. I think that her name is Cat or something like that. Anyways, I don't think that she has that certain something that you need to be a host on one of these shows. I think that you either have it or you don't, and my guess is that they will get someone new for next season, because she really is bad in my opinion.

Thanks. :D I was wondering about her dance credentials in particular. I know that credentials have been the source of a lot of controversy on DWTS, for example. Just wondering how this show's hosts compared.

She admitted on the last show that she has no dance experience. So, I'm sure they only picked her because she's British and beautiful. They say that because Simon has done well that now reality shows want at least one British person on their reality shows. I thought that was interesting. But if anyone knows Simon's background, that man is incredible, and he's got the background to be on the show not just another pretty face for Simon. I just love that man! ;)

Stas,

I don't think anyone on this board wishes you anything but the best of luck on the show. Representing dancesport at a high level on mainstream television is great, and it is fantastic that you are doing it. Don't worry about people talking about your routine. We are just a few people (out of millions of tv audience) who have seen Max and Yulia's version, so naturally, we'd want to compare it. They are world latin showdance champs so of course their performance will be better, and by dancing to their music (with similar choreography), you should be prepared for those who have seen both to compare them and voice an opinion. Just because we can compare or criticize doesn't mean we are jealous. I'm sure you can dance that routine better than most of us too, but that doesn't mean we aren't entitled to an opinion. We use this message board to communicate our thoughts about dancesport, and you put yourself in the spotlight, so you should expect people voicing opinions. When we see you next time on the show, I'm sure there will be more comments - it is just the nature of things.

That said, I'm sure I speak for everyone here when I say that we think you are a very talented dancer and wish you great success. Its always good to read the message boards to find out what people are saying, but be prepared for good and bad, and don't let it bother you too much :-)

I agree. But take the good and the bad comments as a way of learning. I think that sometimes we tend to not want to hear the bad stuff and that's when things don't go so right, because we think we are all that when we aren't, or that we just don't need to listen because they don't know what they are talking about, which can hurt you though in the long haul of things. So no matter how someone says something on here, just learn from it. If you think that our advice can make you a better dancer than take our advice. If not then don't use our advice. That's how I see any activity that I enter. If I don't then I start to take things personally when they were never meant to be personal, then I might never improve myself as a dancer or as a person in general.

Good luck! ;)

Thanks Larinda and pygmalion.

I also wanted to chime in to another convo going on in this thread regarding:

This makes no sense to me. Why does the host of a show have to have the credentials regarding the subject of the show? Do Regis Philbin or Alex Trebek have an encyclopedia-like memory for random facts? Does Bob Barker have a 6th sense about the price of various products (without going over!)?...that would be a pretty lame superpower. Is Ryan Seacrest a multi-platinum recording artist? Does Joe Rogan really not fear anything? Is Pat Sajak a champion at playing what is essentiall hangman (except with a giant wheel). The list goes on. Hosts of game and reality TV shows have nothing to do with the content of the show. They are just a pretty face and are very talented at being spontaneous, dealing with contestants, and keeping up the pace of the show in a charismatic way. In essence, by not being experts at the content of the show (as in Idol, DWTS, or SYTYCD) they serve as _our_ representatives to that world. We learn about it along with them. The host is made to be someone the general public can relate to.

Well, I think that people were mad about DWTS in general. They hated the hosts and the judges and a few of the celebrities (this was during season one I should say). So, don't be surprised when someone doesn't like something about a television show especially when you participate in the activity yourself in your daily life. But that show was run very badly up until last season though.

Anyways, I for one don't care if that host knows how to dance even though in a way to me it would be nice so she knows what she is talking about instead of coming off like a dumb blonde, but she's still a very bad host. Ryan and Tom and a few of the others have that extra something in them that make them shine. It doesn't matter how good looking they are either. They just have something in them that make people want to watch their show. I just want to turn off So You Can Dance, because of the host. She's horrible.

I actually prefer her very much over last year's host. The judges are a different story because they have a large impact on people's votes for the winner. DWTS was only an experimental summer show the 1st season- of course it wasn't run well. If you want to turn off SYTYCD, go ahead- you should watch for the dancing rather than the host. Besides, like I said, I prefer her over the girl from last year's who liked to pretend she knew about every style of dance. As bluetango saud the host's job is to do just that- to host.
