Starting date: March 26, 2012
Class period: FROM March TO July


This is a virtual learning posgradute course. A personal password will
be provided to students before the beginning of the classes and it will
be required in order to enter its virtual campus.

The course will cover the following main areas, divided roughly
into two different modules

  • The political genealogy of tango: it implies expository texts mainly. They are available online every two weeks. Each professor writes his/her own lectures either individually or in collaboration with others. Every lecture develops the curriculum proposed by this course.

  • The history of tango: Every lesson has been designed in order to allow students to approach the musical history of tango not only through the most representative compositions of each period but also through its visual history, for which a wide variety of Argentinian films of all times have been selected. These digital materials will be available every two weeks according to the development of the curriculum.
Each class includes a bonus track accompanying the lessons
which contains visual and/or sonorous rarities related
to the history of tango.

Evaluation procedures: All students must present a final written work
(paper or essay).


Although elsewhere it talks about the interdependent component parts
of tango - music, dance, poetry - music rather than dance seems to be
at its core. Not surprising that a sedentary occupation like listening
to music takes precedence over such an active activity as dancing.
Many more people are interested in the music itself than dance it.

This no lightweight course, the admission qualifications would rule out
many social dancers who do not need such academic knowledge anyway.

The cost isn't minor either - US$480.

HISTORIA INTEGRAL DEL TANGO

Objetivos

Describir e interpretar el contextohistórico en que se gestó y evolucionó el género artístico original de laciudad de Buenos Aires.
Explicitar los aspectos artísticos deltango en sus diversas manifestaciones, musicales, líricas y coreográficas, desde sus orígenes hasta la actualidad.

Temario

Primera parte
Los orígenes. La estructuración de la Argentina moderna. Elpaís y la ciudad de Buenos Aires a fines del siglo XIX. La inmigración y su impactoen la sociedad local.
Las formas primitivas del tango y sudifusión. La danza. El origen social de los cultores originales; losinstrumentos musicales y de reproducción del sonido. Los inicios de la difusióninternacional.

Actividades audiovisuales:
Se escucharán fragmentos de grabacioneshistóricas de Angel Villoldo, Eduardo Arolas,
Juan Maglio, Roberto Firpo, Carlos Gardely José Razzano.
Se proyectarán secuencias documentales dela ciudad de Buenos Aires a principios del siglo XX y una reconstruccióncinematográfica del local nocturno “lode Hansen”, de la película Los muchachos de antes no usaban gomina (ManuelRomero)

Segunda parte
La conformación de la sociedad porteña enlos años veinte y treinta. El centro y los barrios. El origen de la radio y la difusión de losdiscos radioeléctricos.
La canonización del género del tango. Autores,músicos y cantantes. La evolución técnica y artística. La orquesta típica. Elteatro y los locales de diversiónnocturna.

Actividades audiovisuales:
Grabaciones de Julio De Caro, OsvaldoFresedo, Juan Carlos Cobián, Francisco Canaro, Francisco Lomuto, JuanD’Arienzo, Rodolfo Biaggi, Carlos Gardel, Libertad Lamarque y Charlo.
Se proyectarán fragmentos de laspelículas Tango (con la aparición del célebre bailarín El Cachafaz), Idolos dela radio y Yo no se que me han hecho tus ojos y del film documental Losmisterios del tango.

Tercera parte
La década del cuarenta. Los cambios enlas costumbres. La integración de la industria del entretenimiento; la radio, el cine y los medios gráficos. Losbailes populares.
La madurez del tango. La nueva generación de músicos y autores. La superación técnica y elenriquecimiento poético. La identificación de los sectores populares con elgénero.

Se escucharán fragmentos de programasradiales de la época (Radio El Mundo y Radio Belgrano). Grabaciones de Anibal Troilo, Carlos DiSarli, Ricardo Tanturi, Angel D’Agostino, Miguel Caló, Osvaldo Pugliese,Alfredo De Angelis, entre otros y de los cantantes, Francisco Florentino,Alberto Marino, Floreal Ruiz, Angel Vargas, Roberto Rufino, Alberto Castillo,Raúl Berón, Raúl Iriarte, Roberto Chanel, Carlos Dante.
Se podrán ver secuencias del film El tango vuelve a París con Alberto Castillo y Anibal Troilo y de la película documental Tango: Cien años de historia.

La nueva sociedad urbana. La cultura juvenil a partir de la década delsesenta.
La declinación del género del tango. Renovaciónartística. La lenta extinción de las orquestas típicas.
Los artistas del tango contemporáneo y lareconstrucción del género. La perduración de la danza. La herencia. Los objetoshistóricos del acervo cultural.

Imágenes y grabaciones de Astor Piazzola,Quinteto Real y Nuevo Quinteto Real, Raúl Garello, Orquesta Típica El Arranquey de los cantantes, Edmundo Rivero, Julio Sosa, Roberto Goyeneche, AdrianaVarela, entre otros.

The canonization of the tango genre. Authors, musicians and singers. The technical and artistic evolution. The typical orchestra. Elteatro and local nightlife.

Recordings of Julio De Caro, OsvaldoFresedo, Juan Carlos Cobian, Francisco Canaro Lomuto Francisco, JuanD'Arienzo, Rodolfo Biaggi, Carlos Gardel, Libertad Lamarque and Charlo.

one hopes that diplomatic relations with Argentina dont deteriorate...

The Argentine govt seems to be using tactical distraction from its countries problems by blockading UK vessels that have been to the Malvenas/Falklands

and even the US Govt is getting twitchy about Argentina's economy...
 
I smiled when I saw "Hansen lode" in the translation. Bad Google, I thought, bad, bad. Then I checked the original. It says "lode Hansen". Bad Janis, bad bad.

By the way, why translating? I suppose the lectures will not be given in english.
