Speaking of Michael Jackson...

I saw a follower throw in the moonwalk in the middle of a lindy turn. The leader lead her to 4 then instead of completing the turn pushed her straight backwards. This I've seen and done. But instead of just walking through the pattern, she did the moonwalk back to count 8. It looked so incredible. I want to do that. But I don't know how to do it. :? Anyone here know the basic steps?

Good move . . . I use it in WCs every now and then . . . there are about 5 patterns to use it in, but anytime you have to back up, you can use it.

I know several followers who use it!

It would be extremely difficult to put in words . . . if no one can put it in words, come back to me. I can get you started . . . it's more of an illusion, combined with popping out and straightening your legs/knees.

Yes... but describing a move in hop-hop is not the same as describing a partner dance moves, to many weight changes and isolations involved, particularly in gliding (the hip hop style that moonwalking is a part of). It is mostly illusion that gives it that unique look.

That said I'll try and simplify it as much as possible, but let me suggest you ask someone who knows it to teach it to you. It'll make more sense when you can watch them break it down, rather than having to visualize it.

4. Stand on your right foot just as if you had entered into the four of the swing-out/lindy turn. Your left should should have the heel in the air and be to the left and behind your right foot, at about hip distance apart.

&. Shift your weight to your left foot, but leave the left heel up, the right foot flat.

5. with your right foot "floating" just above the floor slide it backwards keeping it parrallel to the floor.

&. Your right foot should be just passing your left. At this point you are going to start to lower your left heel and slowly apply more weight on to your right foot as its heel comes up. Think working a clutch and gas pedal at the same time. Your feet should be in the reverse order of the 4& right before entering the six.

6-8. Repeat steps 5 - 5& with the feet switching back and forth.

Here is the thing... the whole numbers are roadmarks... the "&" counts are intended to just describe what is happening inbetween the whole counts, not at anyone speciifc point in time.

All gliding works with this heel lowering/foot hovering/sliding movement. Forward, backwards, sideways, pivots, and in circles.

Thanks dnice,
I would have had her stuck on the 4& . . . tough to describe that part since ost or all of the weight is on the L foot with the R foot forward, then sliding that R foot back . . . it is easier when someone is there to actually show you how!

No problem Steph glad to help. Glad to see another monkey on DF.

Vince, if you know the forward, sideways, circular, and pivot forms of gliding as well as the moonwalk, you'll find all sorts of interesting places to include it.

I'd suggest looking up hip hop classes at some point. I get a number of West Coast Swing dancers in my hip hop class looking for new isolations and funky footwork.

When I dance West Coast a lot of people assume I'm a Carolina Shag dancer (I do it but I'm still a baby in it) because of all my footwork. It's just lindy syncopations and hip hop footwork "westified".

I can't go forward or circular with the glide, but definitely back and some sideways!

Maybe if I can get those Lindy privates with you, I'll take some of those "new isolations and funky footwork" privates as well!

d'nice gave a very detailed example. I'll bet many people will read this and learn how to moonwalk!

Here is how I describe it in a nutshell
1> Put the ball of your right foot slightly behind your left foot. Make sure the heel of the right foot is elevated,
2> Keeping your left foot flat, drag it behind the right foot.
3> At the very end of the drag, switch so that your right foot is flat and your left foot is behind your right.
4> Keep practicing until the switches become fluid.

I'm getting it! I'm getting it! :D :D :D
Thanks so much D Nice and DanceMentor!

I've practiced it tonight and I have the steps down. What I need now is for the smoothness of it. That will come with time I'm sure.

On the flat foot that is dragging, take just enough weight off of it to move it, no more. It should feel like you really have to pull hard with the ball of the other foot. Just as soon as you make the swith start dragging the other foot.

Micheal Jackson Dance move

ok I have been trying to get this move down for quite some time..
I can do the moonwalk ect.. but I notice he shifts sideways and I really don't know how he does that .. can someone give me an explination to that? where does he put his weight? what foot? how does he push out?
kind of like the moon walk but going sideways..

thanks love this site!
