Split cuban breaks

Okay everyone I have a question. I've been struggling a LOT with split cuban breaks lately (2&3&4&1, all in left to right hand hold). The problem I've been having is that when I'm centering my spine (so that it does not travel during the breaks), it's really hard to have a decent weight change and hip motion, while if i focus on hip motion and weight change it's fysically impossible for me to get up to the speed :S. Can anyone help me with this?

Why not focus on keeping your spine centered, and slowly add in the hip motion and speed? Doing all at once is a recipe for frustration... You already have the "how" to do it, now you just need to make each piece part of your muscle memory. Work on centering your spine first; then, add hip motion; finally, slowly increase tempo until you've got it... give it time.

Your upper body goes to the opposite direction of your leg goes I think even Though you spine needs to be centered. Think that you make you body 'X' shape and it will create more hip actions and speeds.

In the Cuban breaks you need to keep your spine in 1 place and mostly move your legs and hips..... Try pushing out the hip with the step and move from your center/pelvis instead of upper body.

This is one of those rare movments where the foot precedes the core. This doesn't intend to say that the core/body does not move. The press into the floor, w/ say, the right foot, will extend the left outward as the rib cage responds. I would say that as long as the spine is centered and upright, don't even think about it.

Okay, I have to say your tips were all quite helpfull in locating the problem. My biggest problem wasn't that I did too much in my core or that my spine was not stretched by muscles, but that my checked forward walks were utter crap. I thought that a checked forward walk meant that I start off with a traveling spine but that is not really the case in chacha (though it is more or less like that in rumba). I found that if put my forward leg just slightly in front of my body I'm immediately in a checked action and thus can recollect, instead of first traveling, then placing, then checking and so on.

Is this correct or not? (example of what i meant, the first few steps they do: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dmh-nBSmIF0 ).

yep

Yes you are quite right to say that in the Cha cha check you will not really need to move your body weight (I would move it slightly from my hip area though)....and your check action will never receive full weight - Its about 50%-80% of weight at most.
