Standard skirt worry..

OK Remember the final scenes in Shall We Dance? where John accidently trods on his partners skirt and rips it off?

I have the ultimate fear of this happening to me! Not so much by my partner but getting my own heel caught in it.. My standard skirt has an elastic waistband and one small tug and it will come down.

So ladies (or gents if you have seen it happen) has it happened to you?
Any ideas for making sure it wont happen?
My main concern is in the Waltz and Quickstep where the backwards steps are taken so long on the toe.

Thanks!

I would either look at safety pinning it to my top or taking up the hem a little so the chances of catching it with your shoe are smaller.

- shorten the hem

- consider tightening the waistband

- replace the hem finish with a snag-free one. for example, lycra type fabrics don't actually have to have any finish on the edge, and it's harder for a simple flat edge to snag

wear a pair of unpadded bike shorts/workout shorts under your skirt.

Like all your dancing, if something happens and you loose your skirt, take it in stride, pull it back up, and enjoy the music and dancing. (you may want to visit the ladies room to do any adjustments at some point).

welcome, tanzsegler! :D

Can you sew your skirt to your dance panties at the very least temporarily. For ballet we were often sewn in to our costumes for security and used sew our ribbons to our tights

I made an interesting discovery today. If I wear those slip-on soft plastic heel protectors on my shoes and I brush my skirt, the fabric catches on the protector. If I wear the suede cross-shaped protectors that I tape on with old-school cellophane tape, if I brush my skirt the fabric just slips off the heel. I've been using the suede protectors for about 6 years, so I never realized that the plastic made that kind of difference.

But what happens with the plastic/rubber heel protectors that have the suede glued to the bottom? ;)

You need the ones with suede on the bottom and Teflon on the sides...

My guess is that the real difference is that the rubber is "grabby" and has distinct edges, wheras a heel point wrapped in suede is slightly rounded, and the suede itself isn't grabby unless it's wet.
