standard vs. latin

having said that, Nik's considerable accomplishments which I respect immensely, do not render his observations to be indisputable, nor do they render someone else who's accomplishements are different to neccessarily be of any less value...maybe, but not certainly

From the beginning of this year I have been testing the theory that not practicing at all and just taking 3-4 lessons per month will improve your competition dancing. So far it has been working great as my standard results keep going up as I kept not practicing it. But if I would tell this to anyone then they would look at me like I was crazy. Same thing about the weight thing, it works great for me if I think about putting the weight back on the heels, because I don't make myself backweighted but it helps me set my frame and posture and everything else in place.

Not that anyone is hating on my statements but there is a lot more to just weight over heels that has to be explained along with my statements that I just don't want to type out.

I still love everyone here and have no negative feelings about anything that was said. =)

Making oneself feel almost backweighted is an excellent strategy for latin and ballet dancers doing standard. My partner and I have been using it for a while... Latin and ballet dancers are used to having weight much more forward than they need to have in standard and thinking of weight being on the heels helps a lot with not beign too forward weighted.
Ideally weight should be in the middle of the foot though on average. What we can think of in order to achieve that is a separate issue.

We'll see how my strategy of two standard lessons and lots of practice per week is goign to work for me...

lol well I've switched my strategy to 2 lessons a day but still no practice.

I have been thinking about the standard vs latin thing and it seems that for 10 dancers, the couples are much better trained in Standard than in Latin and to get near the 10d final you must be in the standard 24 at Blackpool. There is only one couple in Latin, Alex Silde, and the rest of them are not even close; But then again, he is not close to their standard either.

rofl....... lol this just goes to prove that standard is easier and people learn it quicker........ just kidding. :)

lol...actually...I am finding that my creaky old self is grateful to only be doing standard two days a week....(we only have access to the big floor on those days)...I am grateful for the recovery time

For me, latin comes much more naturally. I used to dance other styles like jazz and ballet so my back is very flexible. I can go months without doing latin in my lessons and still be dancing it just as well, if not improving just from practice, and remember everything. Standard on the other hand, is more difficult for me, but because of that I just work on it harder because I love it. I have to work on it constantly to see improvement, unlike my latin.

I think I might use that your "some lessons no practice" strategy for latin, if we really decide to do it... Because latin is easier, of course :-)

seriously though, that might have happened historically: if all couples are stronger in stnadard, then it takes a lot to do well in the standard part and less to do well in the latin part.. therefore couples that specialize in mostly latin will get killed in the stnadard part, and even if they do well in latin - not make the cut... maybe it has something to do with going with the flow...

I decided I'm going to really improve my standard in this month before blackpool and then see what goes on from there. I really want to compete with all these standard dancers.
