I'll be staying a few months in Buenos Aires and plan to spend most of it dancing (both social dancing and private lessons). Where's the best area to stay and be close to the tango scene?

have you looked at the Happy Tango book?
I have a friend who plans to spend a month there, and am kinda sorta planning to spend at least a few days this fall. So hopefully others will chime in with information.

Shrug. I can't remember just where I stayed offhand, but I could find it on a map...not that that helps you. IIRC, it was a business district, not a tourist district, which was kind of cool. I want to say it was a block from the intersection of Corrientes and Callao (sp?)--in the opposite direction from the huge wide avenue whose name escapes me at the moment. Stayed in an apartment, so got to experience the whole shopping thing. (Milk...in plastic bags!) It was safe and very convenient. Even if you're not in a prime area for touristy things, the cabs are so plentiful and the subway is good it's never a problem.

This is a Congreso district, where I always stay when I go, and where I would recommend to stay, because I find it convenient, in the middle of everything, with all amenities, transportation, and many milongas and tango studios within a walking distance.
However if you plan to stay for several months, you may need to know that it is not the most quiet area, not the nicest, or greenest or cleanest, including the air. Personally, I did not mind, some people do.

Very true. It is loud, not green, and it's city-dirty. But also very inexpensive, and lots of locals, and not many tourists (that I could tell).
