Stoning Chiffon

Hi,

Is stoning chiffon any different from stoning other fabric?

I am about to stone a dress with chiffon godets, and a pattern starts on bodice (lycra) and extends into one godet. So basically only one godet will be heavily stoned. Is this a good idea? Would this create any problem, like uneven godet move when I dance?

Thank you.

stone a piece of scrap chiffon with some misc. stones and see if it does what you are thinking it is going to do. Chiffon is a different animal than lycra and it depends how big your godets are and how they are set in to your dress on how its going to hang.

One uses chiffon in dressmaking for the movement of the fabric. I think too much decoration might well compromise that, if you were too heavy-handed.

Ok, I'm not an authority of ANY kind but I'll tell you about my experience. I made a dress with a multi-layered chiffon skirt and I stoned the top layer with a total of 5gr of 20ss stones, just scattered. The glue soaked through more than other fabrics so it was a little unwieldy. I had to make sure to let it dry longer before I could shift it. The fabric stayed sticky for a long, long time so the top layer would stick to the next and I'd have to pull it off. There are slight...uh, I guess you could call them "dents" in the skirt around each stone, but I don't think they're noticable from a distance. Here:

(sorry, can't get the pic itself to post)

You need to stone chiffon separately. As twink mentioned, it's sticky for a long time. You don't want it to stick to any layers below, so it's impossible to stone chiffon quickly. You need to put something underneath, like plastic or wax paper, then let the glue dry fully before moving on to the next section.

Properly means does the fabric still move freely? Does it still look/feel light and airy? Any danger of a lopsided skirt? Ya know. Properly.

I know what pygmalion means. Chiffon is very lightweight, it's floaty. That's why its used in petticoats and the like. You don't want to weigh it down and spoil the movement.

It depends on how many stones you use...mine moves just fine, it's a circle and a half and the stones (5gr) are about...oh...2 inches apart or so. I would imagine there is such a thing as too many stones...but if you're going to put that many on why use chiffon?

That makes sense. 8) I figured that one could get to a point of diminishing return, with stones on chiffon. 8)

You mention the size of the stone. That makes a difference, too, right? You're using lighter weight stones because of the fabric? (Just asking. I have no idea how sizing of stones works. )

I used the same size stones that I used on the bodice. I just gave the size as a point of reference. :) I generally use 20ss, although I've used like 8 before when I had a small design to make.
