Stress eating ALL THE THINGS

Confessions of a sugar addict: I have been known to eat sweetened condensed milk straight out of the can, spoonful by spoonful. When I want to get fancy, I stir some lime juice into it, and tell DH it’s deconstructed (more like preconstructed) key lime pie.

I sometimes also eat icing/frosting straight from the plastic tub it comes in, spoonful by spoonful. (Current favorite is Betty Crocker Rainbow Chip frosting. The rainbow chips are actually tiny chocolate pieces that dissolve deliciously, not nasty plastic stuff. Previous favorite was Duncan Hines Creamy Vanilla frosting.)

I’ve heard people say, “ohmygawd that is so gross - it’s way too sweet - I’d puke if I did that.” Umm…no. The word “too” is never an appropriate modifier for the word “sweet,” in my universe.

Because eating raw eggs can be dangerous, I no longer eat slices of raw cookie dough from the Pillsbury plastic-wrapped tubes like I did back in the good ol’ days. Instead, I free-pour (i.e., no measuring cups involved) white sugar, brown sugar, baking soda, salt, flour, vanilla, butter, and applesauce into a mixing bowl…stir together, maybe add a handful of semi-sweet chocolate morsels…then put the homemade cookie dough into snack-size ziploc bags and store them in the freezer until the next time I need a hit. Sometimes they last 2 or even 3 whole days.

My personal stress eating has a heavy emphasis on sugar, as you can see. How about the rest of you? What foods* are you drawn to when you’re being smothered by reality?

* the term ”foods” here encompasses any and all vaguely food-like substances

P.S. Blame credit goes to @scullystwin42 for suggesting this thread.

Raw flour can have bacteria like e. coli in it. You might consider cooking it before mixing it in if you really want to be safe.

Meanwhile, I'm currently eating a hotdog bun with butter and jam because I'm feeling snacky.

Chocolate.

I used to get a 91% chocolate that could help calm me in amounts that wouldn't cause weight gain. I can't get that any more, 92% is too bitter as a go to in case of stress, and resorting to 70-86% is causing weight gain.

- spoonful's of brown sugar - this was a kid thing, but once in a while I must have it
- spoonful's of parmesan grated cheese - another kid thing I seem to have outgrown
- bowl batter from baking - I don't care how unhealthy it is, I'm probably eating whatever is left over in the bowl
- peanut butter straight out of the jar - I haven't outgrown it yet
- potato chips and chip dip - I now buy vegetable chips or something healthier, and don't buy chip dip; I have been known to eat a whole big bag of potato chips in one sitting; if I have potato chips, I limit the amount or at least try to
- soda - I have a few little cans of ginger ale in the refrigerator, that are strictly reserved for an upset stomach; no exceptions
- cough drops - this started during the pandemic when I was sick; now, I sometimes want a cough drop or two for no good reason

Extra cheesy cheezits
Shredded sargento cheese
Salami and cheese
Sour patch watermelons
Raw cookie dough
Peanut butter and onions

cheese is really good

I’m working from home today, and I’ve got more a case of the munchies, rather than stress eating. I read this thread just before I was going to head to the refrigerator – and:

Rainbow Chip Frosting?! Peanut butter and ONIONS????!!! (I’m tempted to ask whether that’s with creamy or chunky peanut butter, but don’t answer that ……. I don’t think I want to know.) I gotta say, the thought of that pretty much killed my munchies.

And anyway, I know that there’s no decent cheesecake anywhere within a 7-mile radius of where I live. So, I’ll have to settle for a nice cup of tea.

Whole Foods has a surprisingly good NY-style cheesecake. (I say this having grown up in the NY-metro region.)

Eating fruit may help reduce your sugar craving and also add some nutritious food to your diet. It might take a little getting used to but that should really help you a lot if you just have some fruit around more often. And of course sugar found naturally in foods tends to be far superior to sugar in processed foods

So far today, I have eaten an apple, a pear, and a grapefruit (also some Activia yogurt and a glass of almond milk). I usually eat at least 2-3 pieces of whole fruit per day. Red grapes, green grapes, bananas, kiwi, oranges, cherries, I love all fruit.

I don't actually give in to my crazy sugar cravings every time they strike. But when I do give in, it's no holds barred.

That depends on the fruit. Berries are the best because they are low in sugar (and have the best flavonoids). Pineapples, mangoes, grapes are so high in sugar I might as well eat cookies, although of course fruits are better from a nutritional point of view (vitamins etc.).
