Studying more swing stuff

What's the name of the maneuver in swing where both are kickin' with the inside leg (mostly the inside), and the leader is changing the follower's kicks to forward & back? It's a one-hand connection, but the one hand changes to whichever side is inside, to the partner.

A quick view of this was in that Charleston video of Al Minns and Leon James, but here is a video with a much longer example: dcswingdancing.com. Under the red letters which say CCB Jam - May 21, 2004 there is a video of Tom Koerner and Amanda Bailey. The moves I'm asking about are at 19 secs to 25 secs in the video. Tom Koerner is in a lot of those videos, so look for the one with Amanda Bailey. There's some other kickin' thing before this, so watch for 18 or 19 seconds for when this one starts.

This is something I that completely understand how it's done, and I've been practicing it. I just don't know the name of it. What's the name of it?

For those who already know how to do it: how long did it take you to get good at it?... not just kicking & turning, the whole lead/follow partnering.

It's a charleston move I believe, but the name escapes me.

How long it took me...? I never really got it the first time I tried to learn this move, but I knew nothing about lead and follow, even though I thought I did. After a protracted absence the next time I did it it took several minutes to learn the move. I've forgotten it again from lack of use, (haven't done much swing at all) so must find an opportunity to do it again.

David,

Can't access the video at present, but from your description, I'm pretty sure it's the 'Open Charleston'. I've only just learned it, but I always think it looks good when I see others doing it. As with most Charlestons, it seems to go with faster music.

"Hand-to-hand Charleston"? I seem to recall that's what it's called on a Frankie Manning tape.

In our class notes, our instructor called it "Cross Kicks".

That is, if I'm thinking of what you're thinking.

I think I've heard it called "Cross-handed Charleston", too. It's a fun one to do, but I lead into and out of it a bit differently. Sometimes, I do a 'mini-dip' to get out of it.

I've heard it called all cross kicks, hand-to-hand charleston and cross-handed charleston, and it is open-handed charleston style. There are two ways of doing this. One is with both leader and follower kicking while side-to-side facing same direction and the other has leader and follow kicking while side-to-side but facing in opposite directions. :)

One of the things that I found early on in dance discussions is that the same steps and moves are not always called the same thing and sometimes the same term is used for different moves. That can make for a lot of confusion.

And to continue the tradition of a confusion of terminologies, that sounds like what we call "kick throughs".

I noticed this from the time I started learning; one example is when someone mentions a pretzel I can't be sure if it's the same one I learned under that name or the move known as the hamer lock which I've often heard as being the pretzel. :?

Hammerlock and pretzel are two different moves. Of this I'm sure. I've done both in salsa and swing.

cool we can name the maneuver "Open one hand-to-hand cross kick through Charleston" I'm starting to think maybe the whole sequence has multiple names. Both in one direction might be open or hand-to-hand while the switch to opposite directions might be named kick through or cross kicks.

I learned that one as hand-to-hand charleston.
kick throughs are the ones where you face one way, kick, face the other way, kick, etc ad naseum. :)

at least in my little world.

Hi Boo!

Totally off topic, but I checked out Yuval and Nathalie's web site yesterday. Wow! What credentials. I didn't realized they'd danced in a couple recent movies, on top of everything else. Gotta check it out. Really impressive.

Okay: Resume on topic discussion at will.  8)
