Super Tuesday

anyone voting in super tuesday primaries?

i've never done that before, as am totally non-partisan. but am doing it for the first time because there's an unusual candidate i want to support... as much as the wild world of e-voting actually allows that to occur, anyhow.

am hoping the polls are open early enuf or late enuf so i don't have to miss much work... bizzy week.

I'm voting! NJ polls are open 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. What's this about "e-voting"?

electronic voting machines. easy to hack & corrupt. inadequate security & audit trail. talk about undermining the basic right to vote...

anyway, cool -- have you voted in the primary before?

am gonna hit the polls early -- glad to hear they're open pre-dawn.

I was registered as "decline to state" for many many years and so couldn't vote in the primaries where I was living. But now I'm registered with a party and so am happy to vote in the party's primary tomorrow.

My state has "motor voter" registration, but it seems that when I switched my driver's license it didn't "take," so I have to go vote in my old precinct where I used to live. Fortunately it's only about a 10 minute drive away, so it's not that big a deal, but I need to get this straightened out going forward. My change in voter registration was supposed to happen automatically when I checked the "motor voter" box on my forms at the DMV, but I guess not....

In my city we have been using paper ballots that are then optically scanned. I like these because I get a receipt with a number that could presumably be used to trace back to the actual piece of paper I voted on, if it ever came down to it. There's been lots of talk about changing to touch-screen voting, but I don't see the point. The optical scan system seems to work fine where I live: I make marks on the paper ballot, I get a receipt, I feed my own ballot into the machine that reads the marks and counts the votes, and then stores the paper ballot in its locked insides. This seems like a reasonable compromise between hand counting paper ballots and having 100% electronic balloting. It gives the speed of a machine count yet still provides a paper trail. I never understood what all the fuss was about to change systems, especially to a system that the election officials in my city/county/state have serious doubts about.

Yes, but I'm more excited about voting in the primary this year because I feel my vote means something this time. We used to have our primary in June and by then the nominees were pretty much decided. But, not that it's on Super Tuesday, my vote actually means something.

Amazing how you can have a thread on an upcoming critical election - and no mention of the candidates or the voting preferences. I realize DF has a rule about being non-political but maybe there should be a 'does not apply the night before' rule. I mean, its sort of undemocratic isn't it? Maybe there's a party for dancers :)

Sorry, now I am being a trouble maker again.... Story of my life... Of course I'm in Toronto so its easy to be a stirring spoon...

Agreed. :D

Although I appreciate eddie's pot-stirring, lol.

I have no idea what system my current locale uses...will find out tomorrow.

Thank you to samina and everyone who conducted themselves brilliantly - and expressed caution - on this thread!

There are many interesting things to share - and we all can learn from one another and enjoy our time together - but as DP pointed out, perhaps this would have to end (and no baiting either!).

So sam - the states conduct things differently and I find it interesting because I don't know more than I know (or think I know!) . . . out here, whether there's an interest to vote in the primary or not, we also have various propositions to vote on - at the state level certain funding, term limits, etc., and at the local level, things like major park projects.

That's nice to hear, larinda. I don't know what all good it will do, but I share your sentiment. A wise individual will always have my support, no matter the odds. :D

I did not know that, reb. Makes sense. Will have to do a little google to see what all is on the jersey primary ballot besides prez candidates.

There are none more cynical than I about the current system, but I certainly like to make informed decisions, pseudo tho they may be.

DW grew up under different system - she reaallly learned how to be cynical at a young age.

For these ballot measures, I have to study like the dickens to sort through it all and come prepared to the booth - no way I could sort through it all on the spot - wish I had done homework this well when I was a kid!

I wonder who writes them and what truths they couch behind apparently benign language. There must be lengthy tomes of legalese available for readers who care to face the details. Thank god for the internet which makes that available with just one click!

I know you are all right - but still, its the biggest sport out there!

[Hmmm, failed :stir:, have to run over to a different thread. I know, lets go poke the whiners, there's always sport over there.... :car:]

I just found out that in California, people registered as "decline to state" are allowed to vote in the Democratic primary, but they have to request the ballot at their polling place -- it won't be given to them automatically.

California State Republican Party rules only allow registered Republicans to vote in their primary, so if you're a "decline to state" you can't join in.

20% of the registered voters in California are "decline to state."

For once it's going to be interesting in California on Primary Night.
