TA private teacher recommendations in Buenos Aires...

Hi everyone!

I'm a salsa dancer but am on holiday in Buenos Aires for a month, and have planned to do some intensive Argentine Tango while I'm here!

I've only done some basics in Tango a few years ago, so I'd be looking to start from scratch.

Anyone have any personal recommendations of teachers who would be good for private classes, preferably around the Palermo region of BA?

Also, does anyone have any idea of the amount I should be paying for privates? I was expecting private classes to be reasonably cheap here compared to back at home (Australia).

Thanks for your time!

Taz.

Try a Google search for Ricardo Barrios and Laura Melo. When they are in BsAs they teach out of an apartment in Palermo. Wonderful teachers of the elegant Villa Urquiza style, and very nice people. For foreigners, I think the price is about US$50 (often with both of them teaching at the same time), though that may have changed since January 2007.

Dalila Yentl (ht tp://w w w.diasdetango.com/) might be cheaper. I took privates with them for 30 US$. They're not in Palermo but they're not too far either, I walked every day from my place (Palermo Soho) to theirs.

Exactly one year ago, several teachers I met were charging ~£20-30/hour. (120-160 pesos/hour). Exchange rates have shifted somewhat now. Price is heavily dependent on how fantastic the teachers think they are, so the celebrity tango types can ask 300+ pesos/hour. The prices seemed to be a little cheaper than in the UK, but with much much more choice and quality on offer. I have no doubt you can get a very good deal with teachers once you've established a dialogue with them and they know who you are and that you want a series of lessons.

Group lessons were very cheap compared with anywhere else (~20 pesos).

I may have got the numbers wrong, as my memory is a bit fuzzy.

Actually, nothing wrong with Cecilia G. - she's lovely as a person and an amazing teacher - but I was actually thinking of Graciela Gonzalez (La Negra). I missed her NYC worshops but I have yet only heard of *one* person that hasn't been blown away by privates with her...

But it all depends on what you are going after..

Hi everyone!

Thanks for the recommendations... I've sent off a few emails and will make a few phone calls over the next couple of days and see who's available!

I think the hardest thing is going to be making it to those milongas and clubs at 1am...

Anyways, thanks again, and if anyone else has any good recommendations, please keep posting them!

Oh... and any feelings on the group classes near Palermo? I think the closest place is La Viruta on Armenia in Palermo Soho. Any others people particularly recommend... Especially for beginners with only simple Spanish skills...

Thanks!
T.

LOL. You'll adjust. You kind of have to when you can't get dinner out before 10pm (when the restaurants open--when you'll actually eat is a different matter)! Long afternoon/evening naps are your friend.

Yep. When in Palermo, not having much stamina left after the various daily classes, I attended only two milongas in one month. But it all depends on how long you stay there. If it's only for a couple of days then you don't need sleep.

For the love of tango, don't go to La Viruta to learn to dance. It tends to be tourist central, i.e. people who want to try tango for a few hours while they're on holiday. Classes are enormous, and several are held in the same room, so its chaos. Also, if you want to see the big dogs out dancing, don't bother going there until 3am on a Friday or Saturday night. 3am-5am is the sweet spot for the decent dancers to show up. They tend to play a lot of salsa, rock and roll and other music through the night too. Good or bad depending on your perspective.

If you can get to Villa Malcolm (not too far from La Viruta), you should meet lots of europeans, so you'll have people you can probably talk English to. Very different style of tango danced there though. "Hanging with the cool kids"

Neither of these two venues are situated anywhere near Subte stations, so you'll have to brave the buses or splash on taxis to get there.
