Take my advice: Get your First Aide Certification!!!

So, today I ran into an incident where an employee passed out and fell to the floor. She apparently had low blood sugar (which to me says Diabetes and/or seizure). Anyways what happened is that no one knew First Aide, so I had to take charge. I do have my certification from the American Red Cross. I led her step-by-step as soon as we got her to wake up... including the managers until the Fire Crew came to pick her up.

I can't believe how I just took charge like that. It was like something came over me and I knew exactly what to do and what to say to her. The others were just standing around doing nothing, but it's like what my sister says that if they don't have their certification, then they feel helpless. I was surprised though, because we have over 100 employees, and at least fifty of them were by me at the time lol.

The cool thing was that the managers and the employees that were all by me, had all treated me with a different respect after that. One of the managers that didn't know my name knows it now, and she made a special point to say thank you and bye to me today. I even got a high five from one of the employees before I left today. It had only been a month since I had been employed, so my guess is that I have a job there now lol. It's like what I told my sister, they know how I handle stressful situations and that type of thing.

Anyways, have you ever wondered though like why you are at a certain place and at a certain time in your life like how I wondered about this today? I kept thinking that if I had married my x and everything else that went with it, that I wouldn't have been able to save this girls life. Or if I had been doing anything else, then this girl might have not lived since no one else knew what to do. Well, I wouldn't know if I would call it saving her life, but I helped keep her alive though if that makes sense. I mean if she would have closed her eyes like she wanted to amongst everything else that happened during that time, then she could have had a concusison or worse.

So, get your First Aide certification. You never know when you will need it. I have had mine for three yeaers now, and haven't had to use it until now. It expires in September, so I'll have to renew it then. It's just worth to have!

Yes. The time you spend is definitely worth the potential payoff.

I know I know that I have learned that lesson already, but it was refreshed in my mind today that's for sure! ;)

IIRC, there are a couple DFers who either are or were first responders -- trained, professional emergency medical people. Uhh... kansas49er and IndianaJay, maybe? They had a lot of interesting observations on the (mostl) pros and (a few) cons of having certifications.

There was a really good thread about first aid/CPR a while back. Hmm... gotta find it. I wonder what it was called. :?

Well, I give them credit, because I understand how hard that job must be! ;)

Congratulations to you Spratt! Not everyone, even with training, can or will do what you did that day! My hat is off to you, and continue to spread the word!

Awe... thanks you guys! I'm just really proud of myself right now lol. I know... I need to step back into the real world lol, but I just amaze myself sometimes I guess!!! ;)

You have every right to be proud of yourself, IMO. Reacting calmly and doing what needs to be done under pressure. That's very cool. :)

Awe... thanks again! I just feel sort of weird being happy about it when she was in so much misery. It just doesn't seem right to gloat in that respect! But it's hard not to at the same time though! ;)

The only con that I can think of is you really need to remember your limitations. Always call 911 first (unless you're by yourself and it's a child needing rescue breaths, give the breaths for a minute or so, then call 911). And get out of the way once the EMTs get there.
Good job girl!!!

I agree! One of the customers had a cell phone, so she called 911 right away. Then the store manager had someone call right away too. So, they were over immediately, but it seemed like forever! And I asked the store manager if he wanted me to stick around once they were there, and he said that he didn't need me to, but thanked me anyways. And I said I was going to go back to my section then and did. I didn't want to be in the way of their work. But thanks for the compliment! I appreciate it!!! :)
