Tango good! Other dance bad!

I listen to the music, and play with that music, feel that music.
Having fun does not necessarily mean that you are jump around.

I find tango music the most beautiful music in the world.
So when I dance my partner always feel that I am in love with that music.

I like that follower sometimes wouldn't let me go, or they become mellow after dancing with me.

yeah but the moment you smile more than the Mona Lisa it aint tango any more.

Tango demands le cara fea ('ugly face')

ITS like the long word whassisname used about the open embrace.

If you're tangoing and having fun it aint tango.

It can be passionate, indifferent, just plain bad, soul searing, beautiful

not fun,

absolutley not fun; I mean you think about the number of people who "disappeared" under the last government; so the Argentinians are happy people? I'm sure they'd like you to think so, but they have a pretty dark past.......

So you wanna be dictate how someone should feel. :headwall:

If I enjoy sth I have fun, I wouldn't dance if I didn't enjoy it.
So spank me for having fun while dancing tango.

In Buenos Aires, lots of milongas have so-called "tropical tanda" when people dance cumbia, salsa, merengue, also there can be a tanda of swing, also paso doble is danced, and at times foxtrot. Other milongas have chacarera. In our local milongas, we mostly have salsa and swing break of one or two songs.
From time to time my tango friends (including my instructor who is argentinian) and I go to places with swing or salsa music, and dance those dances with great pleasure. Locally we are blessed to have many wonderful bands who play live music in those genres.
I believe any genuine kind of social dancing is good. By genuine I mean performed in a natural cultural context, and based on lead and follow and musical improvisation. Also, from my observations, learning Argentine tango makes one a better dancer in general.
The problem is, a lot of dance studio do not teach dancing, even though they call it (whatever they teach) that. So, when a person who has had that kind of instructions (and therefore thinks he or she learned some dancing ) trys Argentine tango based on the genuine approach, the clutch becomes very obvious. Oftentimes the situation leads to misunderstandings and frustration on both sides.
Also, I think it would be fair to say that Argentine tango is very complex, and mastering it demands a lot of effort and dedication, perhaps, more than other dances, at least, in the beginning. That might contribute to the situation described by the OP.

then your definition of fun is just awry; One can enjoy looking at say a painting by Turner,
or be moved by a poem by Sylvia Plath; but fun is only one aspect of enjoyment and it means you are using as interchangeable words. Next You'll be telling me that sex is fun.

Cambalache Lyrics

That the world was and it will be filth,
I already know...
In the year five hundred and six
and in the year two thousand too!
There always have been thieves,
traitors and victims of fraud,
happy and bitter people,
valuables and imitations
But, that the twentieth century
is a display
of insolent malice,
nobody can deny it anymore.
We lived sunk in a fuzz
and in the same mud
all well-worn...
Today it happens it is the same
to be decent or a traitor!
To be an ignorant, a genius, a pickpocket,
a generous person or a swindler!
All is the same! Nothing is better!
They are the same, an idiot knat
and a great professor!
There are no failing grades or merit valuations,
the immoral have caught up with us.
If one lives in a pose
and another, in his ambition, steals,
it's the same if it's a priest,
a mattress maker, a king of clubs,
a cad or a tramp.

What a lack of respect,
what a way to run over reason!
Anybody is a gentleman!
Anybody is a thief!
Mixed with Stavinsky, you have Don Bosco
and La Mignon
don Chicho and Napoleon,
Carnera and San Martin.
Like in the disrespectful window
of the bazaars,
life is mixed up,
and wounded by a sword without rivets
you can see a Bible crying
next to a water heater.

Twentieth century, bazaar
problematic and feverish!
If you don't cry you don't get fed
and if you don't steal you're a stupid.
Go ahead! Keep it up!
That there, in hell
we're gonna reunite.
Don't think anymore,
move out of the way.
Nobody seems to care
if you were born honest.
It's the same the one who works,
day and night like an ox,
than the one who lives from the others,
than the one that kills or heals
or than the one who lives outside the law.

Poema lyrics

It was a dream of sweet love,
hours of happiness and loving,
it was the poem of yesterday,
that I dreamed,
of gilded color,
vain chimeras of the heart,
it will not manage to never decipher,
so fleeting nest,
it was a dream of love and adoration.

When the flowers of your rose garden,
bloom again ever so beautiful,
you'll remember my love,
and you will come to know,
all my intense misfortune.

Of that one intoxicating poem,
nothing is left between us,
I say my sad goodbye,
you'll feel the emotion,
of my pain…

not exactly a bundle of laughs...

Una Emocion; Tanturi & Campos

Come and look what I bring in
in this blend of music and words,
it’s the song that inspired the
longing that I felt last night.
It’s voice of tango modulated in every corner
by one who lives under the spell of an emotion;
I want to sing for this tune
that is ever so sweet and captivating.

Surrounded by the illusion, I listened to it last night,
the emotion compounded by things of yesterday,
the house where I was born,
the grate and the vine arbor,
the old merry go around and the rose bush.
Its accent is the song of sentimental voice,
its rhythm is the beat that lives in my city,
it does not have pretension,
it does not want to be indecent
it’s name is tango and nothing else.

This emotion I’m bringing
it was born in my voice loaded with nostalgia,
I feel a pounding of rebellion
when they disguise its verses to this tune.
If it is so humble and simple in its beats
why writing a bad example in each phrase?
With what is left of emotion
it’s very easy to reach the heart.

Surrounded by the illusion, I listened to it last night,
the emotion compounded by things of yesterday,
the house where I was born,
the grate and the vine arbor,
the old merry go around and the rose bush.
Its accent is the song of sentimental voice,
its rhythm is the beat that lives in my city,
it does not have pretension,
it does not want to be indecent
it’s name is tango and nothing else.

this is one of my favourite tangos where there is a singer; nostalgia is about as cheerful as it gets, but it refers to bad examples; is he complaining about the quality of other song or lyric writers? this isnt fun its poetry.

This is where it's at...if the music does not 'get' you..why are you dancing to it?
And if you insist that 'You can dance tango to anything'....you sadden me.
I must admit that my favorite dancer (with whom I dance) feels this way but when I'm with her and they start to play a Huajera or some slow Milonga (Colombiana)...I excuse myself... in Tango there is Monagamy and there is watered down Promiscuity... sorry, but call me an 'elitist' or whatever.
As Chicho said..he went to his first Tango class and when he felt the woman in his arms (and heard the music) he said to himself "Hmm, there's something here" and then he and the deconstructive two others went ahead and did everything to destroy the embrace.
Well, now he is sounding like he regrets it.
Afterall, Tango is... Man/Woman, the embrace and the music...I know it and anyone, who is old enough, also knows it.:friend:
We are so fortunate to have this music still exist today...don't betray it.

Jesus christ, Mario. Aren't you more than a little harsh...and unreasonably so. Good god.

People who don't think the same way "sadden you." Music you don't approve of is "promiscuous crap." Three teachers are "evil." Or, perhaps more correctly, there's one you don't like and two others who are evil. They have destroyed things. You, and only those who think like you are "mature," and are the only ones who get it. Those who don't think like you are in danger of betraying the dance/the music/the rest of you.

Are you SERIOUS? Have you listened to what you're spouting?

Bloody hell.

Sorry Peaches, but I was raised Catholic. :headwall:

I was raised in one of the most fanatic Catholic cultures in the world and I don't have the issues enumerated (above). I would tend to agree more with Peaches on this.

Besides. The people who invented the tango are (predominantly) Catholic too, and they don't have issues with it either.

Then, you just didn't get the right education. Tell us your story; were you 'educated' by Nuns? ..or what?
"Fanatic"....Irish??? .. if not,= then you weren't fanatic.

Me too, Mario.
But that doesn't mean I can't enjoy a wide variety of dance styles.
And when it comes to AT, if there is energy in the music I dance to it. And that is true in what to me seems to be a great number of songs. If people want to label me as a heretic for dancing open and with energy, and perhaps label me wanna be "nuevo" because I don't plod along the line of dance, so be it. (I probably don't want to know)
It seems though, that most people don't hear it and dance accordingly.
At my age, I think I can easily claim that I am "mature", but I don't "dance my age".
I'm not trying to be anything. I guess I dance who I am.
More and more the narrowness of some thinking in some quarters of the AT world concerns me. Right now I much prefer the freedom of the swing world. AT could be a world where we can dance who we are and aren't resticted to one style or way of doing things.
What is it about AT that can make people so dogmatic?

P.S. Chico is just maturing. Or maybe he is ready for something else. Lindy Hoppers found slow dancing with the spin of "blues dancing", which to me is a similar evolution as individuals. When Western Swing (West Coast Swing) was still a regional style, it was seen as a more mature style of swing that jitterbug or lindy.
