Tango Music - non-Piazzolla

I am a total beginner but got fascinated with tango, watched some tutorials on YT already and lurked here a bit So far I have listened to Gotan Project and some Astor Piazzolla. However, I would like to reach beyond that. Perhaps you could recommend me some other composers and famous tangos. I generally tend to like those which feature a very sad melody or at least melancholic, I also like energetic ones but it has to be a dark, powerful sort of energy. I am especially intrigued by the tangos from the 1930s but it would be fun to find new recordings where the sound quality is superior without compromising the depth and emotional content of the original. Any recommendations?

Based on your description, you may want to check out music by Osvaldo Pugliese. His pieces are bold, soulful, sometimes heavy, sometimes dark. Here's 100 year anniversary album: Edición Aniversarion 1905-2005

Pugliese is also available on iTunes.

Some of his music is much more danceable. Piazzolla is not (for the most part). As for sound quality, the classic ones, some are the best ones were all recorded in mono. Its part of the classic appeal, so don't expect crystal clarity. Besides, myself, and a lot of us tango people enjoy listening to classic recordings rather than the new stuff anyway. There's a lot more depth and character to them than the boring constant rhythm of the new stuff.

Hi Ciel_Rouge, welcome! It is fascinating how you leap at those difficult pieces right from the beginning! When I started dancing TA, I thanked and sat down when Pugliese and Piazzolla were played. I began with the rythmic tunes of Canyengue and Milonguero, or with these very slow NeoTangos. The next step was Salón Tango, and then the late Salón and Pugliese pieces.

Amp is always good to listen to, but I know many, argentines as well, who would disagree that Piazolla is not danceable. I know... a huge discussion worthy of its own thread.........again.

Thanks for the tip about todotango, I'll listen to samples there and check what I like. So far I definitely like El Huracan, I also like Pugliese and his La Yumba as well as Canaro:

Of course I do realise that the most famous tangos were composed around 1930s and they were mono recordings. However, I am trying to play some of this music to my female friends and would like them to sound good on my equipment. I get the impression that famous tangos are like famous jazz standards - recorded by different artists over time. Therefore I am also looking forward to recommendations of tango music recorded recently.

Hey-

There is a CD coming out on amazon.com that has a lot of different tango artists on it, although Astor Piazzola is on the CD a few times, there are 50 great tango songs on it. The CD is only 99 cents starting August 21, you should look in to it.
