Teaching a pivot?

Surely, auto-ochoing is a concern.

But if you're talking about as basic a thing as "how to pivot," I'd say just to get them doing something close first, than to overwhelm with technique and blah blah blah right away. It's easier to get people moving and to make tweaks to things along the way, then to paralyze them by making sure they're doing things correctly and perfectly to begin with. Continual, incremental refinement seems to be a good thing.

.

I agree with this. Some beginners have problems with balance so they put the other foot down and then down know which leg they should be stepping with. Thats why doing ochos across a room - pivot step- pivot step exercises the muscles to balance ( i practiced ochos at home when I was a beginner); leading the follower to a stop, then to walk on follows on from this, as does changing from forward to backward ochos. Leading forward ochos without stepping I teach straight away as it learns the leaders how to use the full extent of the foot to create a chest lead.

Is it really possible to teach ochos without emphasising the heart-to-heart connection? If you dont dissociate you're not really dancing, are you?

Here ya go...Homer and Christina....they are usually pretty good about making people aware of all the different ways of doing things and making videos for it...the "flavors" of ochos...from non pivoting to overrotated...they start with the non-pivoting example.

OK, it's coming up to that time again. The Teaching Of The Ochos....

Re-reading this thread, I think I'll still try to introduce dissociation as the Topic Della Semana, but I may go for the diagonal-walking thing as an exercise also.

I'm wondering if I can find a decent non-scary synonym for "dissociation" now... any suggestions?

Twist? At least it's not scary to me.
