The Dance Bible

i watched all the discs except chapter one this week... watched the last one (on musicality & purpose) twice. just love seeing the variations one can choose while dancing the same sequence of steps...

enjoy, tanya. :)

I've came across too many people like this who have taken lessons from champions and former champions. (Not that I am saying anyone here does this.) They just blindly accept what their coaches tell them without questions nor understanding of the reasons for doing what they were told.

That's why a good coach will always explain why something should be done. However, in the lack of a differing opinion, I will pretty much trust what my world champion coach has to say :-) Of course, that has come with seeing that his advice works 99% of the time. He is fantastic and I believe it's important to trust one's coach. If not, real effort can't be put into dancing the given advice.

anybody got any comments on Disk 1, on personal & couple balance exercises specifically ?
I understand that some people naturally has better balance than others but somehow i must be able to improve on my dance balance ? My instructor says not to worry about it at this stage, but i feel i can not practice effective enough because i am "falling" all over the place....

i can relate, corne...all last year i worked on correcting my alignment and diagnosing physical weaknesses that were contributing to my balance issues. i found it maddening how easily i would fall out of balance.

adjusting my alignment as described in the dance bible helped. i went through a lot of phases with making subtle shifts in so many areas of my body... my torso, hips, thighs, knees, ankles, toes... walking, going down stairs, up stairs. what you're talking about is potentially quite a journey if you're trying to remediate what isn't working.

stabilizing my core muscles, especially those that support deep in the lower abs, has also helped. my balance is still evolving as the journey continues, but i am world's away from when i first got these DVDs last year, thank goodness.

but if you want to make a dramatic change, IME you need to pay attention all the time and listen acutely to what shifts your body wants you to make.
:)

Scouring the net i found this. Summary of disk 1 of the DVDs......... this counter rotation business is intriguing.

1.Personal Balance
Balance=Weight Fall without Side Load
The way we carry our body weight=Counter Lever System
Exercises of counter rotation to separate body weight and body activity:
(1)Frontal(spine)
(2)Lateral(spine)
(3)Rotary(shoulders)
*(1)(2)(3)=Three planes of movement
(4)Hip & Leg(hip joints)
Weight Position does not change while body is moving
Exercises of counter rotation to transfer weight vertically
Three positions :On Foot (Foot in Position)
On Middle (Center Position)
On Foot (Receive)

do you have the set, corne? have you seen his demos about the rotation of the torso & hips?

I'm debating getting it. Either that or another 2 private lessons with a pro at IDB..... addressing the balance issue. Progress on the balance issue will make me more likely to practice my dancing and ultimately to keep on dancing.

That's for sure...in the end, all we have is our balance and how we use it to move the body around.

Making those adjustments is a very personal thing, in that each person's proportions and distortions and weaknesses are unique. On top of that, I know from discussion on DF that there different schools of thought regarding how to align the body for balance.

Whether you get the vids or go with coaching, my advice is to experiment, experiment to see what works for you. :)

I'm seriously thinking about getting this set. It's a lot of money though and hard to justify for a beginner.

I think it is probably full of lots of stuff I would love to watch and think about but much that will be beyond me too.

Do you think I could maybe sell it on and recover half my outlay later?

I will look on the internet to see if it is available in Australia. I have seen them before on You Tube and they are quite fabulous, they make it look so easy and we know that it is not!. She always looks glamorous and every time I see her she wears her hair down. They are a beautiful couple.

I have the set now.

I'm not experienced enough to comment on the technicalities or physics. I am going to learn a lot I think but I do find the pace and the Japanese translation intensely annoying and this could well put me off using it as often as I otherwise might.

Use the japanese translation moments to take what Baricchi just said and try to apply. In this regard, the pace is helpful because it gives you the opportunity right in the moment to get out of your head and into your body. It's all theorý until your body intelligence increases through sensation, anyway. So it could be regarded as a handy feature enabling you to do rather just passively watch.

The irritation comes from the brain not wanting to slow down, but slowing down the intellectualization and getting into the body is where real understanding and satisfaction lie... :)

Samina, You're such a positive person :) I wish I had your patience and ability to see the good side of everything.
