Theater-What kind of dance is best to know?

Hello there! :) I'm brand new here. I was looking through some of your threads, and I must say..you guys really know your stuff! o_o I was absolutely shocked when I was reading some of your posts. So, since I've never had real dance lessons or anything, and since dance is really interesting..I decided to register.

Anyway..! ^^; As you can tell my my username..I obviously am a fan of theater and acting. I have just entered a 9-12 High School where the Drama program is very prestigious and everybody is extreamly talented, especially the seniors. I just went to a meeting yesturday, and we recieved a little bit of information concerning auditions. We need to sing a song, and if we get callbacks read a scene from the show. But to my shock everyone needs to dance too. :? I really have very little dance experience. And at my Jr. High you really didn't need much dance talent to get in, so =/ Yeah.

Here's my question. In theater, what type of dance is really a good type to know how to do? I know that hip hop isen't really used too much in theater. XD Umm..tap and jazz, possibly? O_o Well..if anybody could recommend one of those, I need to get a head start on..something. x_x I mean..I'm not a horrible dancer. But I need some sort of routine at least for my audition to show I have a slight amount of rhythm. I'm thinking I might have to get some sort of dance tape or something. But I would love any ideas and appreciate them whole-heartedly. Eventually I think I'll take lessons from a studio, but for now I just need something or other for the audition.

Thanks so much and I'm looking forward to being at this forum! :D

Welcome to the forums! I hope we can get you moving your body perfectly to meet your goals.

My daughter has been to a number of auditions for live theater, and several times she has been asked to dance Jazz (or if she knows how to dance Jazz). So it seems that Jazz has some special significance in the theatrical community.

I agree with Adwiz, unless it is a specific type of dance show, say a ballet, then usually Jazz dance is the one required for most, and theatre auditions.
just a short dance is fine, and dont worry, it doesn't have to be a full out, highly technical jazz dance like in "Fame". well, unless you are auditioning for "fame" ....!

good luck

Nics xx
