This week's mission (Wed 2 Feb 2005) - elbows

is to try and focus on one aspect whilst dancing and then report back

All suggestions welcomed for subsequent weeks of course  :D

This week's mission:

- to try and focus on your elbows and what they are doing! Before I get comments of "it's so easy" this has a personal reason - a couple of weeks ago, I got hit in the face by my partner and the spot is still tender :( the guy was an advanced dancer (plus one of my favourite dance partners) yet, it still happened.

Therefore this week's mission  is to focus on your elbow positions, the angle of your upper arm, elbow, lower arm and hand, all in relation to the move you are doing.

Of course, tips on what to do/how to do it are most welcomed  eg. when you spin, your lower arm should be parallel to your partner and the elbow kept low

Previous missions: :kitty:
This week's mission (Wed Jan 12, 2005) - eye contact

This week's mission (Tue 15 Feb 2005) - Dance with you later

Re: This week's mission, if you choose to accept...

Hmm, this one's pretty easy since my elbows never come into contact with my partner or anyone around me while I'm dancing. I'm very careful about that. Moreso when doing different kinds of free spins (hands high up, chest level, waist or tucked low for different effects).

I think last week's mission was harder. :D

 yes, last week's was harder. No harm done in combining this week's and last week's

Oh, and that spot on my face that still hurts  yes, that used to be "harder" too, but is now tender like <bleep!>

I need to work on this with my Tango and Quickstep. I need to make more of a bend towards my body so as to not be over stretching my partner. At the same time I need to be angling my upper arm more towards partners, so when our hands clasp there is more of a nice angle being made by both arms.

Yep, I know these are all being placed in the Salsa Forum, but this stuff has so many applications to Ballroom, too.

Yet, with my comments over on Salsaonone's mission thread for this week, I'm not sure how much time I will have if any to work on this this weekend. (Although if I can do this stuff during the comp, my dancing will likely be better. ;) )

I'll take this challenge!

It works fine together with the "dancing under umbrella not getting wet" principle I'm trying to focus on to reduce my steps.

ahh this one's actually a challenge for me because I STILL think about elbows specifically anytime I'm doing patterns with mixed open/close positions especially on recovering from turns and spins. last week I had a partner nail me right on the forehead with his elbow and I thought karma must really exist because I can remember doing the same thing in my first couple years  those poor men
I dont like too much arm styling but some of it is from necessity, to keep those elbows away, so I keep practicing on things like keeping a tight 90-degree on turns and tucking in my arms during multiple free spins so that my partner feels safe interrupting me anytime, or if he's standing close

it's not natural yet because I still work consciously on it.
it's also strange that I have a harder time of get my left arm out of the way and up with guys that are taller when reconnecting a closed postion - any thoughts on this? I seem to have my left elbow brushing their chests too often for my taste

but anyways, mission accomplished (anoche) 8)

Thursday and friday I was stuck in bed sick... so when I went dancing this saturday, I wasn't yet at all well...

Right in the first dance, my follow was probablytrying a "recently acquired" styling move, so after spinning she struck me with the elbow right in the nose! Really, it seemed like a karate move... I saw only red stars for about a minute!

So ok, for mardi gras I'll try to tke exact notice of where my elbows are at all times! :)

I did the same to my partner last Friday   - but it was probably not you (you were sick and NOT in Sweden I guess?)

It happened when I did a travelturn keeping my elbow bent and at the same time I tried to stay under the imaginary umbrella (to keep my steps short). Poor guy!

Sabor and Pacion  :kissme:

Last time anyone told me - BY POST - to visit a shrink I had found out that my car had moved 25 meters during lunchtime  . It was still parked at the same car park but at a different place. I send a nice question by mail to the whole company and received a lot of advices about shrinks and Alzheimers.

Although this riddle got a very simple answer (yes cars sometimes do have the same key) I sometimes do agree with the answers. I suggested to my old boss that I needed a partial lobotomation (?spelling?). It must be simpler living with no connection between the hemispheres. Not nowing about interfering feelings and so. Much more easy to do a proper work - like some men do

Ouch, Pacion darling, I'm so sorry to hear that, I hope you're feeling better.
I've been hit pretty badly on the nose a couple of months ago, fortunately it wasn't broken or anything.

And I did "elbow" my partners ~3 times during my salsa "career"  , very embarressing  so I'm definitely very careful since, and I 'll see what else can I do in the spirit of this week's mission
