With all due respect, we are not haters, we are paying clientele.

With all due respect your some teachers paying client not mine, and their business practices have made you feel jaded, not me.

I have never had a client feel bad or mad about top teacher or top student. In fact all of them have wanted to on their own accord want to win it for themselves and me. Their is a sense of pride in doing so.

Perhaps we should skip all placements and awards. I'm sure you all won't mind skipping your scholarship awards and championships. Heck let's skip single entry placements to. Let's all get together for 3 days, spend a bunch of money on travel, costumes, hair and make up, entries and dance around for 3 days 12 hours a day. W can all get a trophy as a welcome gift and then all go home. Who needs any type of award.

Why are you taking this so personally? Why are our experiences (good or bad) less valid than yours? Is there anything that any poster could say or write at this point that wouldn't get you bent out of shape? (because a number of people with opposing views have conceded some of your points). So far this seems to have been an honest and critical discussion with various viewpoints represented.

OMG- the original post by OP for this thread is to discuss top teacher awards and their effects on comps....

Somehow it morphed into a thread where anyone who dared to voice an opinion is called a 'whiner' or a 'hater'....let's get real...vast majority of us are not any of that. If anyone takes the time to read these posts, it's easy to see that no one is begrudging their Pro anything....talk about over reaction anyone?

Over reacting much?

he has a point...every one has a goal...we don't have to respect the goals of others but if we start to decide which goals are and are not worth trying to measure, there is an argument for throwing all of them out as meaningless....for me, the top awards are more a moment to thank people for supporting dancesport...that some feel the need to preen over it as an accomplishment is their perogative, that being said, as someone who has dropped that kid of coin, I appreciate that it is respected by organizers....personally I would prefer a nice room and a complimentary spa service to receiving an award that no one respects or pays attention to, but it is what it is....and, provided that a pro doesn't bully his students into it, good for them for earning the dough

Exactly my point- the goals of teachers AND students are all meaningful...but to simply dismiss the folks that are paying for this or wondering if it's excessive, I don't know about it...as long as there are people willing and able to pay these exorbitant costs, Pro Am will exist....and do well...but each time this topic comes up on this forum, it appears it is likely to be shut down by those with opposing views....I personally, do not see it as whining, and I certainly do not see it as hating...but surely there is room to hear and be respectful of those that are actually funding the entire industry...if not, I rest my case. I have nothing further to add

No one ever said that students goals aren't meaningful. I never heard that anywhere. What I did see is that some teachers are more skeezey about their business practices and push their students to do more they can financially and some aren't. And they only way to get rid of those pros is by not giving them business and steering people away from them.

I think making a big deal over "awards" for uncontested events is stupid, but it happens and good for them. But it doesn't personally doesn't bother me that much.

You are missing the point- nowhere did I hear anyone making a big deal over awards- go back and read all 10 pages- everyone had the utmost respect for Pros and their expertise. The question posed by OP was if Top teacher awards had any influence on comps- it appears it may.... The entire who gets paid how much and is it fair has already been debated.... Many times over.... Some of us do love to compete, and are still willing to pay the costs, BUT, most jobs don't pay that much AND give a bonus on top, at least mine doesn't.... If yours does, and covers all your expenses including your clothes and dog boarding and nanny costs, more power to you- good on you and all that, but having named 10 random professions, can't think of a single other one that does...

Most people are in salaried jobs, given benefits such as retirement and medical. Most pros aren't on that sort of plan. Many pay for those out of pocket. Plus since they are technically not with a company usually, they have to pay another self-employment tax that most people don't have to pay.

As for my job, I get paid next to nothing for the amount of work and productivity I do compared to my other colleagues do. So life isn't fair... But it pays the bills.

And if you are salaried, technically it does pay for your expenses. That money doesn't appear out of no where. And like Jump and Jive said, it's built into his prices, not that he charges extra. So I don't understand how that's any different then building a budget to have enough money for you to spend traveling for your hobbies and boarding your hypothetical pet or having someone watch your hypothetical kid for the weekend. If they could not afford these things, you would not be able to go to the comp.

And you missed the point of my post. People have posted they are upset Top Teach Awards are made out to be more than just about # of entries and less about skill of said teacher and are turned into a big fan fare on Saturday nights. I was making an analogy to that in Am/Am comps where uncontested heats are given the same fan fair as some very competitive heats at high levels. But it doesn't personally affect me so I don't let it bother me, even if I do find it dumb.

So to answer the OP's question, clearly they do have affects on comps. Without them, I highly doubt comps would make nearly as much money as they do. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing depends on how many teachers are skeezy about getting their students to do more heats to earn that prize. Should it be a huge fan fare, I don't know. But I also don't think that it should be done away with all together. I think it's a great way to thank the pro's for doing all the hard work that they do day in and day out so that us hobbyists can enjoy dancing. But that's just my humble opinion.
