Toronto congress report

Well, after about five naps, a 14 hour sleep and two days of only partial lucidity, I think I can hammer something out about the congress.

First I have to mention how amazing it was. I met GayleR, and her wonderful friend. That's a cool story. It was the first night of performances and someone was sitting behind me... someone mentioned how nice her top was and so I turned around and commented on it too. We chit chatted a little and then watched the performances. Nothing really out of the ordinary. The next night, I felt a tap on my shoulder and she said, "were you sitting in front of us last night too?" I said "yes..." and she said "are you from Edmonton?" I got a little weirded out and said "uh, yesss....", and then she said "and are you thespina?" at which point it suddenly clicked and I was like "GAYLE!!" It was soooo weird.. happening to sit next to each other like that. She figured it out simply from me saying I wasn't too familiar with Toronto. Wow. So kudos to you, Gayle... you're sharp.

So I guess I'll break it down a little.

the hotel was great. The beds were deadly. The city was beautiful.

The pre-party on Thursday was fun, and I saw Al Espinoza and Karla for the first time, and was a little star-struck. I met some great people and had some surpisingly sexy dances (hee hee) Although I was nervous and messing up all over the place. I was generally wide-eyed and out of me element for the most part, but very excited. the venue was fantastic, the dancers were great, and I wasn't used to seeing such good dancers all around me... and that was NOTHING compared to the dancers later in the weekend.

I found the performances to be very very high quality, especially Saturday night. Each and every one on Sat night blew me away. I was close to crying a few times. I didn't even mind the length of the shows. Poor Al and Karla lost their luggage and their music, so they did a number they came up with an hour prior to the show, which was fantastic, and funny, and proved what great sports they are, and excellent dancers. I'm taking back what I said about Al. I left with a very good impression of him. Karla seemed unhappy though. I get the feeling she doesn't enjoy the pace or the stardom as much as he does. At any rate, I give the performaces a great rating... even the amateur ones were spirited for the most part, and there was a lot of innovation in many of them.

the workshops were great, I only wish I could have taken more! I hated having to choose one over another for the most part. i think in the future, I'll take fewer, actually, and practice what I learned during the hour after the workshop (unless there's another one I REALLY want to take). I found that cramming too much in almost made them a little less valuable, because I couldn't take it all in. I started to run out of juice. Red Bull next time? Although, I have to say this... dancing 10 hours a day, workshops and social dancing, made me MUCH stronger, and perhaps I took in more than I thought. Some stuff settled in and the exhaustion helped to push my brain out of the way, and get into a more instinctual place. I took Ana Masachote's Afro-Cuban movement (AWESOME), Burju's afro-puerto-rican movement (totally excelent and I love Burju), Bomba y Plena from Young Blood (that rocked), Super Mario's intermediate partnerwork class (not so great), and Ladies' styling on1 from Corinne in Montreal. That was also very good, although most of that stuff I already knew. The next day I took techniques for lifts and tricks from Dave Paris and Zoe, which was really quite amazing and fun, and intro to on2, which was good for me but i wanted a faster pace, spin technique which i picke dup a few things from, but I think I would have liked the partnerwork with afro-cuban styling a little better, then a reggaeton class fom the young bloods again (lots of fun for a little bit of a break :) ), and then a ladies' styling from Ana from Boston. She's great.. I saw her social dancing and was blown away.

I almost had a private with Ismael Otero, who joked around with me a bit over the congress, but nothing materialized, which was just as well, since I was mostly toast during the off-time anyhow. Next congress I'll take fewer workshops and budget in a few well-chosen privates. I just didn't have the juice this weekend. I met Molina, Al and Karla, Super Mario and Otero, as well as all the very very , um, VERY friendly bouncers.

I danced till 3 or 4 every night and wore through a pair of dance shoes. Tee hee. I got a few new tops and hung out with some very cool friends.... I even had some drama on the dance floor. I wound up being kinda more popular than I was expecting.

On Saturday night the band, Ocho y Mas with guest singer Tito Nieves was AWESOME. Actually, it was the first time I'd heard a song that simply could not be danced on1. It was the first time I really understood the concept of on2 dancing being unavoidable in some circumstances. The crowd was huge and there was one point, where I was walking around the periphery of the floor, that I suddenly noticed the life in that room and got a sudden rush of elation. The music, the band, the vigor and skill of the dancing, the beauty of those people and how they were smling and moving their bodies... I mean, it was unreal. I was on cloud nine.

On the last night of dancing, I'd never felt that connected, been asked to dance that much, sweated that much or danced that well in my life. And I knew I was goofing up sometimes , but everything was coming together in a way I couldn't have predicted. I was higher than I'd ever been. So at 4am, I finished dancing, went upstairs to my hotel room, packed up, said bye to my dear friend, got in a cab and went to the airport. I was awake for 32 hours before I finally fell asleep at home. When I got back home I couldn't believe how strong my abs were and how powerful and happy I felt. It was something else.

Unfortunately I'm coming down hard now.. not so much emotionally, but physically. Another day of rest and I should be good. I'm procrastinating unpacking... but I'd better do it soon. Tomorrow I dance again and I want to wear the sweet haltar top I got in Toronto ;) Pictures are forthcoming... I didn't take too many but I got some decent ones I think.

If I've forgotten anything please ask. I'm still processing the whole thing. I'm going to try to go to Montreal in April.. I talked to my husband about it it he said it may be a possibility. At any rate, October in Toronto is now going to be a yearly tradition. Happily :) My dad was ok when I got back, even though he strictly told me to stop talking about it because it wasn't important, my mom was excited for me, my hubby was tired but happy. The kids survived, and in general, things feel good. There are some things I'll change next time I go, but I learned a lot and am so utterly grateful to everyone who helped me get there. There was a lot of support behind me. What a gift.

So! there we go. Gayle I'm interested in your feedback from the congress too... off to cook supper now :)

I'm SO glad you went!!!

Be back later with more comments, after I read through your post. But, for now, I'm SO, so, so glad you went. :D

Karla seemed unhappy though. I get the feeling she doesn't enjoy the pace or the stardom as much as he does.
I saw them in Houston a couple of weekends ago. I didn't think Karla was "unhappy," but I did notice that her emotion on stage was less than I expected and this point in her performing career. However, I don't know how much I was (maybe unfairly) comparing her in my mind to Edie, who has a great stage presence. Al & Karla did one routine that was the exact same as one I saw Al do with Edie back in early 2005, and the version with Edie was much more dynamic.

How can you drop in a comment about "drama" and not give us any details??? :p Details, please....

What else would you change, other than the number of workshops you took?

Overall, it's nice to read that you had such a great time! Some of your posts prior to the trip made me worry that you might have built it up too much in your mind, such that the actual experience would be a letdown. I'm glad that it all turned out well. :)

No kidding!!! Spill! Spill!

So glad to hear you had a great time - even when you're talking about being tired, you sound more energized and relaxed than before you went. It's good to hear! :friend:

LoL. I'll be brief about the drama. There was a guy who liked me. Really liked me, even though he knew I was married etc. He was standing on the side of the floor when I was dancing with another partner, who I had no IDEA liked me, but made it obvious during the last dance that he LIKE liked me. So the first guy who liked me got all huffy and jealous and disappointed and left, which was really a shame because we had spoken quite a bit earlier on, and I thought we could be friends (haha). Actually Sunday night was getting a little too, um, vigorous... and I was glad it ended when it did, because I had about 7 ardent partners getting a little too determined for my/their own good. Ultimately though, it ended well. I think next time I'll have to tatoo my ring onto my finger. I had to take it off that night because the sweat was irritating the skin underneath it... maybe I can get a DFer to accompany me next time and pretend he's the boyfriend/husband or something to act jealous and dangerous and keep these admirers at bay. ;)

And yes. now i've given out enough ammunition for all the "I told you so-ers" to have a field day. Fire away. I'm ready.

hey gread to read ur post and in such detail...im travelling tommorrow to Singapore for Singapore Festival. nothing compared as in the West but considering Johnny Polonco playing and couple of international superstars ex Edie,Super Mario,Cobo brothers heading this part of Asia, im sure its gonna be a blast. :) anyone from the forum heading for Singapore Festival?

suck it in and enjoy the moment:) its rare;)

Eh. No I-told-you-so's here. Sounds like you fended them off reasonably well.

(Besides - even for you married girls, the ego can always use some petting, right?)

LoL... I must say, part of the "problem" was that I was so obviously beaming from the attention. ;) It's hard not to feel just a little flattered.

Yay for you, spina!!! Ardent admirers are good for the soul. Besides. Nothing happened, other than your having a good time dancing. The fact that you're a hottie is THEIR problem, not yours. The wedding ring tattoo might help, next time around. But who knows? Wedding bands can't transcend gorgeousness.

Either way, just as long as you got to dance and have fun. And your husband and kids got to have fun together. That's what's important, IMO.

No nay-sayers are allowed in this thread, anyway.

Hey thanks for the props.

Here's a clip of Jennifer's dance. It was very entertaining.

Jennifer is the organizer of Canada Salsa Congress and former dance partener of Giovanni Torres from Los Salsomanos.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0k4WtlF_Cxg

For size reasons I used the divx codec, but honestly it needs more tweaking. The quality is decent with the exception with a few garbage spots here and there, I just got this Premiere package and I just wanted to put this out there as quickly as possible.

So enjoy.

I'll post some more as I find time to edit the little footage I have.

Ooooh yes I was going to mention Jennifer's dance, too! It was amazing. What a moment.

Glad you had a great time, thespina, but...

On Saturday night the band, Ocho y Mas with guest singer Tito Nieves
WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!!??? I didn't know he was billed to appear. Now I really really wish I had scraped money together, borrowed holidays from next year and travelled to Toronto. I just love that golden voice of his. And it would have made my SO very jealous ;). Never mind. Maybe I'll join you next year .
