Snarky responses are inevitable on online fora. They may stifle debate when the signal/noise ratio drops too much, but I know some fora so obsessed with avoidance of snarky responses (usually either promoting conformity to the Forum Cognos or worse, promoting the illusion that "all opinions are equally valid" ) that they have become 100% sterile, and that's probably even worse.
