Uncontested heats - how to be sure there will be competition at the competition

Just now saw this text posted in the rules for an upcoming competition and I was SO happy to see this that I just have to share. [emoticon of clapping hands] I hope this becomes a trend.

"In all competitive events, where there are less than 3 entries in a category, the organizer reserves the right to eliminate Age and Sex divisions and combine categories."

Although this does not happen to be an event I plan to attend this year, that single thing alone puts it on the list of events to consider for next year. Ensuring there is actually competition at the competition... what a concept.

I have never seen a competition that doesn't say that and I have yet to see a competition actually combine events and age categories.

Same. Nearly every comp I've been to has this in their rules and no one ever does it.

On the pro-am side, it's usually conflicts with the pros that prevents them from doing it - multiple students in multiple levels for multiple pros makes it all very complicated.
