Hi guys, there's a homecoming dance this saturday (Oct 8th) and I've been invited by a beautiful girl that I met through a friend of mine.

I've never gone to any kind of dance when I was in school and honestly, I don't have any clue how it works or where to start (other than the tips I picked up from other threads).

Any help would be extremely appreciated. Thanks! :D

I would recommend browsing through the stickies in the General Discussion section or search for the keyword "homecoming".

Good luck!

Maybe this was stupid, but when I was in high school, I didn't know how to dance, so I didn't ask girls to dances!

Or maybe it was just because there was no Dance Forum web site back in those days (think telegraphs), so I couldn't expect a bunch of total strangers who I couldn't even see to teach me to dance by tapping out a message.

as far as i can remember, no one at my high school homecoming/graduation/prom had formal dance training - most of the dances just involve swaying from side to side....

really? i thoughbt 18 (or 19??) is the min doesn't matter where you are. i think in canada it's actually 21.....

That and it's really crude to insinuate that the girl you're escorting to a dance as a date is of loose character. Not very intelligent.

I don't like him.

I think poland is 18 but they let you inside a club at 16 and once you're in, you can buy a drink....

...I'm always so confused by these high schoolers who want to learn how to dance for homecoming and prom....

I'm a senior in high school and not once have I actually seen anyone do any recognizable kind of dance at a school function (except for some grinding and the occasional break dance). Mostly it's just people sort of bobbing up and down or swaying, or everyone is so smushed together that you just end up with a writhing, sweaty, clothed orgy.

But this is just a personal observation. Maybe it's different at other schools.

Only ONCE do I recall any sort of structured dance at a prom. I was teaching at the time, and was chaperone. A student requested Sing Sing Sing, and I thought they were just being smartasses- but NO.. I was amazed- here these kids broke into an amazing jitterbug with lifts and dips and EVERYTHING.

Wow.

No, the ones on here are just looking for some kind of quick fix. We won't see any of them again after they figure out we won't become their free dance teachers.

A simple search of the sight, or just clicking on "General Dance Discussion" would show them all this site has to offer. It's like barging into church and asking for a dirty grey goose martini. Then getting upset when everyone looks at you like you're an idiot.

Actually, rumor has it that at the senior prom two years ago there was a couple that pulled off a breathtaking tango. I wasn't there though. :(

Also, I don't even know how anyone would get useful dance tips off the internet, especially with technical stuff. I can't really do anything at all unless someone shows it to me....but then I'm really a visual-spacial learner.
