USA Dance Nationals Aug. 12-14

Hi,

Since the USA Dance Nationals are about a month away, I thought I'd open a discussion about the competition.

Who's going?

Who do you think will win/make finals of all the Champ A categories?

How will the new Rulebook effect the competition, in terms of the new dress code, the new Elite Competitor Rules, etc.?

Anything else?

Discuss :P

I'm going, but not dancing -- I need to be at the steering committe meeting for the 2006 Nationals.

As far as the new rule book affecting things, I don't think it will have much affect. The costume rules won't be strictly enforced until the begining of October, and the World Class event stuff won't start until after this year's Nationals. What other big rule changes were there? There was one regarding letting kids in mixed-aged partnerships dance up an extra level, but that's really the only other thing that sticks in my head as directly affecting dancers right away.

I am going... Will be competing..

For standard here is my prediction about the results... We'll see...

Egor Abashkin & Katya Kanevesky of NY
Craig Shaw * Katya
Basil Issaev & Sarika Hudson of NY
Radek Krvsziofiaki & Pauline Malinowska of NU
Andrea Faraci & Erica Ridgeway of CA
Lukas Chockuba & Karolina Szpiech of NY

And then there's the Latin...three of the top six will be:

Eugene K. & Maria M.
Genya Mazo & Maria S.
Artem C. & Giselle Peacock

And while we're at it, I bet the Senior I Standard final will include:

Turtle Brennen & Julie Hayes
Andreas Meijer & Jody Frease

I'll be there :D

This is somewhat related... it's quite sad that since Victor turned pro, no US amateur couple can crack into the semi-final (or even quarter final?) of IDSF championship. I do think all of the US finalists are great dancers, but wonder what will it take for them, or upcoming US couples, to achieve similar or higher status overseas?

Add V & V to the Latin in second?

OH duh, of course! And I wasn't really ranking people, but the couples did kind of come to mind in the order of past finishes, didn't they?

I think Andrea and Erica will place higher than 5th. We'll see.

I think some of this year's finalists will be able to do it eventually, maybe next year. Craig Shaw and Katya definitely have a chance.

So about this World Class stuff: in reading the rule book, there are a lot of categories (world class, elite, regulated, some other ones) for dancesport athletes and the rules applying to them. But those aren't really defined... For example, are any new rules coming up that would limit how much the "amateurs" can teach further or will they just have their own category in World Class and the real amateurs will just stick to the champ category but will not be allowed to teach at all? Therefore, really what this new rule does is create a second level of pre-champ for the real amateurs and the "champ" dancers who teach will now be World Class? Also, are World class athletes considered pros by NDCA and will now not be able to dance amateur in NDCA comps is they earn/qualify for the World Class status?

It's my understanding that "World Class" is something achieved by competitive results, and would therefore not impact one's Am status with NDCA. But that "Certified Athlete" is achieved by passing a test, and that by nature of taking that test, NDCA might recognize one as a Pro.

Does anyone know if this is correct?

Skwiggy, I think your assessment might be on the mark. The NDCA *officially* only lets the "amateurs" who place in the finals of their open championships held at Provo teach. The USA Dance program allows any USA Dance competitor *who takes and passes the USA Dance teaching exam* to teach.

Of course, there's the rules and then there is what people do anyway, including the governing bodies in question. Oy vey.

In many practical ways the entire situation is unchanged.
