Vitamins

One of my "New Year resolutions" was to take vitamins and cod liver oil tablets to, hopeful, reduce the number of colds/flus I had last year. I used to do this years ago  but somehow fell out of practice/habit.

(Nothing fancy, just vitamin C, vitamin B12, cod liver oil  )

I would take the tablets first thing, or as close to, in the morning with a glass of water as "you are supposed to take them on an empty stomach" and then get breakfast when I go into work. Since doing that, I have been finding that I am absolutely ravenous by the time I get into work (which didn't happen before), which is counterproductive to my plan to be ravishing  for 2005!

Has anyone ever experienced an increase in appetite after taking vitamins? What did you do, other than stop taking them?

(Sabor, tj and DP , no "smart" comments please. Otherwise I will wave my magic wand and make your dance shoes disappear  )

Supposed to take them on an empty stomach? How long is your trip to work? perhaps you can have a bite half-way to work? This way you don't feel ravenous when getting to work, and can eat a small meal. Plus, you still ahve the vitamins on an empty stomach...a thought.

I have the opposite thing happen; I feel queasy after taking vitamins (multi, C, Primrose, fish oil, calcium)....so, I actually use it to my advantage and take them in the mid-afternoon when I'm starting to feel hungry and usually I am no longer hungry until dinner time.

I used to wait until I got to the office till I ate breakfast, but I find that having a good breakfast helps me a lot more before I leave the house.

Were you eating breakfast before you started taking the vitamins? I always find that when I have been skipping breakfast for a while, eating breakfast again makes me get really hungry earlier than usual.

Up until I started taking the vitamins, eating before 9.30 in the morning was not something I could do comfortably. I felt as if my stomach hadn't "woken up" as yet.

Taking them mid afternoon is an option I hadn't thought of  (on a couple of ocassions, I did take them last thing at night as an alternative )

Sagitta, my journey to work isn't particularly long...

Yes - usually around 9.30 (sometimes later, when I felt hungry/as if my stomach was awake). But, with taking the vitamins, by about 9.00 I am feeling as if I could eat everything in sight! :?

You start the digestive system going and it wants something more sustaining ten vitamins....How abut having vitamins a little closer to the time you would normally have breakfast?

Do you continue to feel hungrier than usual for the rest of the day?

Maybe eating that early (even if only vitamins) is just kick starting your stomach earlier, but if you are only eating more in the morning, and not for the rest of the day, maybe that's nothing to worry about...

I heard it's actually better to eat most of your food earlier in the day anyway...

If your stomache is not used to having something in it early in the morning, you will notice some differences. Kick starting your digestion with pills though isn't the way to go. I would suggest taking your vitamins with your breakfast, earlier than 9:30. You are not setting yourself up for a good day if you don't give it what it needs to get started.

I have always eaten breakfast. I don't understand how people can get to lunch time and sometimes later before eating. I would pass out!

How about not taking vitamins, and getting your vitamins through eating healthy foods?

I haven't taken a vitamin in my life. I get maybe one or two colds a year.

I strongly recommend getting into the habit of eating breakfast. I always have juice with breakfast, and I stay away from caffeine in the morning, just like vitamins.

(I'm not being a wise guy. I'm serious.)

How about aspirins and other OTC medications DP? I'm curious....

Occasionally I'll take an asprin or OTC med, but I stay away from them if possible. It is my understanding that one's body builds up anti bodies to this stuff anyway. When I get a cold, then I try to take a whole day off, just sleep. And if it's near a weekend, which means 4 out of 7 days are, then this allows me even more time to rest. My colds typically end in 3 to 5 days as a result. Eating healthy foods and getting regular rest seems to help me the most.

Thank DP  When I am stressed, my immune system goes on holiday :? which is a bit unfair as that is the time when I really need it to be present. So yes, I got a lot of colds last year and unlike in the US where I understand in some jobs/fields you get a certain number of days for "sickness" which you have to take or lose, we don't get that. That said, we do get more holiday leave than the US. There, if I am getting a cold every 3-4 weeks, taking a day off each time isn't really an option, hence the cod liver oil :D (which also promote great nail growth by the way  )

The way you are taing vitamins . . . is doing you absolutely NO GOOD. Vitamins are assimilated with food. If taken on their own . . . you will lose nearly 100% of the vitamin through the body's waste process.

Also, you should be taking liquid vitamins, as in pill form, even taken with food, only 2-3% of the vitamins are absorbed. That number goes to 98% or better if the vitamin is in a liquid form.

This is my 2 cents and only my 2 cents . . . for what it is worth, even if it is only 2 cents!
